Techies any tips for my interview on Tuesday?
Edited on Sun Aug-17-03 10:18 PM by BEFOREATHOUGHT
It has been more time than I would like to admit, since my last tech job. I have an interview this Tuesday for a contract to help with a migration project (user end grunt work.)

Any tips or questions I should look out for? I'm a Pc windows (2k,xp, 9x) tech.

Thanking you in advance.

Edit spelling:)

1. Well, first....
Learn how to spell Tuesday (see yer subject).

What does the job specifically entail?

2. Don't bullshit
they'll catch you every time.

They won't mind if you're a bit rusty as long as you've had legitimate experience - you'll come up to speed in no time.

4. Tell them you're a Bangladeshi here on a temporary work visa
Say you'll work for minimum wage, don't need health benefits, and can't understand English slang. They'll put you at the top of the list.

7. If the company is of any size, do a Google search
for everything about the company and its past. Sometimes you can get good clues as to what they want.

8. Read up on the company and the job...
It always looks better if you know a few things about the company and the specific job.

It's also important to be able to ask one or two intelligent questions about the job - try to phrase them so it shows you've been thinking about it, and if possible sound like you have ideas regarding the answers, but want clarification. This can be techie/non-techie but if you're being interviewed just by HR then don't start talking about techie probs, as it will not help!

Think of a few difficulties (techie or non-techie) you've had in previous similar roles and how you got through them - they may bring them up, but if not you can always use them as an example.

Show that your communications skills are good - there's no point having someone do your data migration if they can't communicate effectively with tech support/testers/end users/managers and explain things when necessary.

If I think of any more then I'll let you know, but as I've said before, people skills are tremendously important too. No offense, but there may be 10 people with similar skills and experience going for this role, but if your personality is good and you're easy to work with then you'll get it. When you've got the choice, who wants to work with an irritating moran (sic)?

Good luck.

P.

now, how would you handle it?

:)
can't blame me for trying, and good luck with your job interview.
My advice: spend a bit of time visualizing yourself enjoying yourself at the job, with the other employees, and respecting them and being respected for your work. Make it as cool and as positive as possible. Have a great daydream that entails all you want in employment. Then let it go, and attend the interview and be yourself.

good luck
