Poll question: Best "Guitar" Album
You know the drill. I fully expect "Stop making polls, asshole" to win.

3. Funny you should mention John McLaughlin
I just got The Mahavishnu Orchestra's "The Inner Mounting Flame" album, and it's fucking fantastic.

13. Hey, I Love "Love Devotion and Surrender"
Edited on Mon Aug-18-03 10:58 PM by ribofunk
although the photo of McLaughlin and Carlos Santana staring at the camera in obsequious bliss to their guru is one of the creepiest photos on any popular album -- more so because the emotions are so obviously real. Glad they both escaped from that cult.

On Edit: God, there is some good musical taste here on DU.

4. Well, You Opened a Can of Worms, SZJ!
That's like asking your opinion on the most beautiful woman in the world or the greatest work of art ion history or the best musician of any genre.

I might have voted for Hendrix, but I think "The Cry of Love" is easily his best recording (although no one else seems to think so). For straight-ahead instumental rock guitar I would have to choose The Steve Morse Band's "Coast to Coast." For acid rock I like Jefferson Airplane's "Crown of Creation." For folk rock it has to be the Youngblood's "Elephant Mountain." Fusion is easily John McLaughlin -- I like the JM Trio "Live at the Royal Albert Hall". Acoustic blues guitar is wide open, although I have a soft spot for Taj Mahal and several of Hot Tuna's recordings with Papa John Creach. And somewhere in the mix has got to be Dire Straits -- the most original picking style since Hendrix. I'm blissing out on the languid "Communique" at the moment.

JMO.

9. I'm no expert...
but I'd have to say Johnny Greenwood stands out from all the other choices provided. I've heard the others a million times and the thrill is gone*, unless I take a long break and re-discover their greatness again. (*Except for Page's acoustic).

12. I agree with you there
This is the best guitar album ever. Allman and Clapton both at the top of their game not trying to top each other, but to complement each other. Even better than Live at the Fillmore East.

I chose "Are You Experienced?" only for lack of choices. Clearly the poll writer is not experienced. Electric Ladyland is the apotheosis of Hendrix's work.

Live Dead would have been good on the list too.

And, of course, this is only rock guitar.

Like many such polls, the choices are sadly limited. It's like having to choose between Arnie and McClintock when there are so many other good 'uns out there.

18. What, no Marquee Moon?
For shame, for shame. I threw down for Maggot Brain anyway, because that one never gets any love on the "best guitar album" polls, most undeservedly. Few other good choices on there too, though I probably would have gone for Doolittle or Trompe Le Monde.

I could see letting the singing on "I Believe" hang around, but do you really like the vocals on "Ride"? Or "The Phone Call"?

It's just so... immature.

There's a reason Joe doesn't sing on his more recent albums.

35. Zappa - Shut Up 'N Play Yer Guitar
Cripes, like anything should even be considered, unless your considering Zappa's "Guitar".

If we're talking guitar albums, most everything on this list doesn't count - they'er rock albums, with lots of guitar, granted, but they still have singing and other instruments and stuff.

And even so, they're nothing compared with Zappa's guitar gems.

(though Allman Brothers Fillmore East is really, really fantastic, as well)

38. WTF?
OK, glad to see a number of artists and solos that truly deserve recognition (I remember voting for both Johnny Marr and the Edge as "Best Guitarist" in Guitar Player polls years ago, and Andy Summers is definitely an underrated genius).

But NOT ONE mention of John McLaughlin in either list? For cryin out loud, the guy was a co-inventor of jazz-rock fusion as a member of Miles Davis' "Bitches Brew" band, and took the whole concept to its zenith with the Mahavishnu Orchestra. When I was in college in the late 70's, every guitar player I knew simply worshipped "Birds of Fire."

Maybe all those guys were too fried from the drugs we did to vote in the poll....
