I hope that subject line gets some responses, cuz this is my first post in the Lounge and I can't take rejection.

Also, I'm interested to know if there are any other avid motorcyclists lurking about here at DU. I just traded my Honda CBR600F4i for the new CBR600RR, and I could not be happier. This is probably the last sport bike that my aging body is going to be able to handle, so I decided to go for something cutting-edge. 0-60 in three seconds, top speed 160mph, 40 mpg, and compliant with 2008 emissions standards. Handles like it's on rails. And for those with a "need for speed," it'll smoke anything on four wheels that's legal to run on the road and attainable by mortals (OK, some Ferraris would leave it behind... but with the Honda you save over $200k!).

There are faster bikes out there, but even if you go for the top speed production bike (Suzuki Hayabusa or Kawasaki ZX-12R, depending on who you ask), you're only gonna be out $11k.

Anyone else here in DU land share my affection for these affordable, environmentally friendly, traffic-reducing, heartstoppingly fast conveyances?

That's a sweet deal.

Transit here in RI is certainly better than it was in SoCal where I lived for many years, but it's still a grind if you live in the country. I'd have to pick up the main route into Providence from a stop several miles from my house, ride into the city, and switch out to a suburban line to get to my office. I think I figured out that this would take me around 90 minutes each way. Compared to under 20 minutes when I drive myself, it just isn't practical (especially since I have to be home by the time the school bus drops the kids off).

3. I commute on a scoot

Literally. A scooter.

It's not as fast as your bike, but it's over twice as frugal.



And I look MARVELOUS riding on it (okay...that's not me...).

Bajaj Chetak, 4 stroke 150cc, Manual 4 speed (on left handle grip),

Top speed 55+mph, Mileage 108 Mpg (that's not a typo - 108 miles per gallon).

It's got enough top speed and 'oomph' to seriously navigate traffic, but not quite enough to go on the interstate (the wheels are a little small for that, too). It's great on 2 lane highways, however.

Plus it's CHEAP!
$2,000 (+about $300 shipping and tariffs) brand new.

7. Rode a scooter for a while

I had a Malaysian-made scooter for a while when I was living in Indonesia. Damb, that thing was scary on those little donut tires! But yeah, if you're mostly doing in-town type commutes, nothing's cheaper to own or run, and you do get that whole wind-in-your-face factor going.

I play up the mileage of my bike to cover for the fact that my real addiciton is the performance. Still, 40mpg is nothing to sneeze at, especially compared to most of the titanic trucksters I do battle with on the road every day! But no matter what the ride of choice, more people should get on two wheels. Not only helpful to the environment, but would reduce traffic hassles immensely.

6. Personally I prefer the F4i

Ive ridden both, and I prefer the seating of the F4i for normal street riding (it isnt quite as aggressive), and if you want a track bike you can set up the f4i to preform as well as the RR.

Of course right now I am waiting for the CBR998rr that is supposedly coming out in '04. That will be the Bike I replace my old 929 with.

9. I hear ya

I spent a LONG day on the bike on Sunday (Ride For Kids charity rally), and I felt it a bit in my legs (34" inseam). No problem with my back or wrists, but the F4i is undoubtedly more comfy. The power delivery on the RR is a drug, though.

The new litre RR will be a frightening thing to behold....

14. Used to ride years ago

23 or so years ago. Had a Honda CX-500, shaft-drive, water-cooled. Smooth and plenty of power, although not a rice rocket like some. But geez I loved it. I still get the urge to ride every now and then, but no way to satisfy it. Sigh.

20. helmets are not all they are, ahem, cracked up to be...

some new studies show that many motorcycle helmets cause worse injuries to necks than they prevent on heads.
the back of the helmet usually sits right at a critical junction of cervical bones, C3-C4 which if broken, leaves one a quadrapeligic.
There appears to be a very high incidence of this injury in bikers who wear helmets.
The theory is that the excess weight of the helmet to protect the head from essentially minor damage while rolling actually causes worse trauma when it is subjected to a whiplash type injury.
These studies are being conducted now in states with helmet laws and states without.
Early results are showing that states without helmet laws are doing better with less numbers of total injury to the cervical spine, and a reduction in the number of incidents of para/quadrapelgia.
