5. Michigan
They may have a sweet governor (oh, yes), but they also have multi-sport felons (Marlin Jackson beats 'em, and Chris Webber takes their money)

They also have a National Championship trophy from 1997, but they have to drive to Nebraska to see the other half of it.

10. Funny you should mention Nebraska
Legendary Cornhusker coach Bob Devaney? Also from (my block in) Saginaw. I can see the house he grew up in from my kitchen window.
John
Anyhow, I could give a sh-t less about the U of Michigan. I went to Central Michigan (Chip-POOOOOOOO-Wah!!!) and am content when we just beat Bowling Green.

geeked out about Steve.

Good luck this year, seriously, well sorta as long as you don't get in GB's way.

8. Don't forget John Conyers, John Dingell, Sander Levin, Kwame
and the late, great Coleman A. Young, who loved Detroit and is buried here at Elmwood Cemetary.
You just have to love any politician that addresses the media via closed caption tv from Hawaii, saying "Aloha mother*%#@%!*.
Or who tells the reporter from the "Worker's World" "you can revolution your ass out of here".
Or who, when the Reagan/Bush FBI sent in an undercover operative to take him down, ensures that the one person who ends up in prison (along with the police chief) is that informant.
Or who refers to the ex-governor of California as "Pruneface". When asked after Reagan's election what he would refer to him as now, Coleman answered "President Pruneface".

There are so many great Coleman quotes out there. He made cursing an art form.

14. They eat pasties in public!
Not even Matcom would stoop THAT low! :-)

Of course that's only on the UP, and...

...the pasties in question are meat pies. Not unmentionables, meat pies. Get your minds out of the gutter!

22. Seen the Tigs four times this year (they lost all four)
Edited on Wed Aug-20-03 03:59 PM by 5thGenDemocrat
But three of the games, including the one Monday night, went into extra innings (like, consideing the state of Detroit baseball, that's a good thing.
Looks like this:
Jun 1 (vs NYY) L 5-4 (17) (Clemens attempted to win #300 and didn't).
Jun (-)(vs ARI) L 7-0
Jul (-) (vs BOS) L 3-2 (11) (Martinez started, no decision).
Aug 18(vs TEX) L 4-2 (16) (ARod hit a Steve Sparks knuckler 450 ft to the opposite field).
I feel like a guy with a cast-iron butt what with all the extra innings. And Mike B and I are probably heading down Friday night vs Anaheim.
John
It's only 100 miles each way. And, lose or lose big, it's still Tiger baseball.

23. Don't forget the Michigan Militia...
Produced some real geniuses, namely Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols.

Terry's brother, John, is the nutcase Michael Moore (also from Michigan) interviewed in BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE:

John Nichols: I use the pen, because the pen is mightier than the sword. But you must always keep a sword handy for when the pen fails.
-----
Michael Moore: Now wait a minute... The Constitution says you've got the right to bear arms. What do you think 'arms' means?
John Nichols: Well it's not like these...
(waves his arms)
John Nichols: It means we ought to have handguns if we want to.
Michael Moore: What about nuclear weapons? Should you be able to have weapons-grade plutonium?
John Nichols: (pauses) ... Well I think that oughta be restricted.
-----
Michael Moore: Why not use Gandhi's way? He didn't have guns, and he beat the British Empire.
John Nichols: I'm not... familiar with that.
-----
John Nichols: There's a lot of wackos out there.
