First, I think Lou Reed's "Rock and Roll Animal" would have been a better choice than VU album you referenced.

But, I'm voting other....Grateful Dead "Live Dead" 1971.

It sounds like a leftover from "II". It appeases the classic rock radio crowd. The REST of the album is daring and new. It is like they opened the album with a bone for the fans of the first two albums. There is far more experimentation, mostly successful, that would be the hallmark of all future albums.

Rock n Roll. What about Fats Domino - I'm Walking, The Beatles - Abbey Road and The White Album, Beach Boys - Pet Sounds, Elvis, Buddy Holly, Ike and Tina Turner, etc. I can think of at least twenty rock n roll albums that were far better and more influential than Exile on Main Street if Rock n Roll mean more than late sixties and early seventies rock and their more modern reincarnations.

IMO the Rolling Stones are by far the most overrated of the supposed rock legends.

Geez, not much of a Zeppelin fan. Any of us Ledheads will tell you that LZ II is way much better.

They branch out and experiment on III. II rips off the blues too much and sounds like parodies or jokes. III is adventurous and underrated. "Out On The Tiles", "Gallows Pole", and "Tangerine" are some tasty tunes.

Even Page and Plant love III more than most fans. They were listening to lots of Joni Mitchell and other folk-based artists and it shows.

I just had to defend III - that and "Presence" never get their due because the radio plays too much of II, IV, and the others.

I have been listening to them since Bonham was alive, and know all of their albums inside and out.

"Houses Of The Holy", "IV", "III", "Physical Graffiti", and "Presence" are better than the second album. Even the first album is better, though it sounds rip-offy too.

I used to be crazy about Zeppelin back in the day, but once I discovered the blues, I realized how terrible Zep's covers and ripoffs were - the licks, the lyrics, etc... I appreciate their later stuff better because they stake out their own turf, rather than stealing from Willie Dixon (who sued them over "Whole Lotta Love" and settled out of court) and Robert Johnson (several lines from "The Lemon Song") and many more.

I have to disagree with SZJ - "III" IS a favorite among hardcores. "II" is favored by the cliched classic rock radio fans who have "Living Loving Maid" on permanent rotation, and would protest vehemently if the radio dared played "Tea For One", "No Quarter", or any half dozen gems that drive "II" into the ground.

I do commend you for daring to argue music with the Musical Asshole of DU! :P

39. Too much filler on Physical Graffiti

Page spliced in all those songs that were recorded for III and Houses of the Holy that didn't make the cut. Had he not done so, it might have been their best single album, but too many of those Boogies with Stu bring the average down. (Actually if they'd left out the filler and instead gotten "Nobody's Fault but Mine" done, it might have been the hardest rockin' album ever. But they didn't.)

Anyway, I agree with DODI: I vote for Who's Next.
