Conservative friends forced to put their kid in *gasp* public school!

They're just beside themselves. They're frightened, seriously frightened! Their son has gone to private school since he started school. They've always thought that public school breeds only atheist, drug addicted, America-hating, tattooed prostitutes, and sometimes with belly button piercings!! But some harsh news about their favorite private school has forced them to choose the unimaginable path.

You see, they learned that their private school is corrupt. The sons and daughters of the faculty get away with murder and get awesome grades without doing any homework, while their own son is constantly in trouble and serving time in some sort of detention. I don't know all the details, but it sounds very odd, and I think it goes beyond what they've told me.

I know their kid has some behavior problems - he likes to play all the time and doesn't like to do his homework, that sort of thing. Pretty much reminds me of every kid I've ever known, but I'm not a parent ergo I'm not qualified to judge. What I do know is that he spent far more time being punished at this private school than he spent learning. That was the straw that broke his parents' back.

So, does anyone have any tips as to how a good young boy can survive the heathen, godless, sinful atmosphere of public schools? Having to interact with other kids whose parents don't drive the big SUVs or minivans? Some might even be those lazy welfare parents, or those poor broken families of single moms. Oh, and fair warning, their son might possibly be forced to interact with blacks, hispanics, or (even worse!!) sons with gay parents!!

O, woe must be this poor conservative family. I don't pray, but I'll meditate for them, truly. :D

After that they'll leave him alone. Surviving public school is a lot like surviving prison. Same institutional food, furniture and paint. The only difference is you get to home from school every day.

But I spent 13 years in public schools, and (so far) my children have spent a combined total of 24 years in public schools and are doing just fine, thank you. I don't think my 15 year-old would be learning Calculus and AP Biology in prison. She wouldn't be learning it at many of the supposedly superior private schools some of her friends attend, either.

20. Calculus at high school? Nice!

Is it common in the entire US? In Brazil, Calculus was taken off the high school curriculum in the early 80's and is taught in the first year of college instead, only for careers like Engineering, Physics etc.

No such thing as an "elective" before college. Any subject is either part of the mandatory curriculum or mandated by the school itself. At least that's the way it was when I was there (1980-82).

And it's NOT entirely true Calculus disappeared from high school. Some private schools specifically geared towards getting people through the most badass college entrance exams (ITA, IME - my alma mater, and precious few others) do teach introductory Calculus in the senior year.

I think it depends a LOT on the size of the school. I went to a school with a class size of 150, and we didn't have calculus offered. But it's pretty common in larger schools.

a non-religeous one. Our school system is way overcrowded and they go year round on 4 different tracks. I dont know how working parents can do it, the kids go for 2 1/2 months and then have a month off and many families have 2 or 3 kids on different tracks, it's a mess. we do without somethings to pay for school, my husbands car is 10 years old but instead of buying a new one he makes due with what he has. If our school sytem were to turn around i would gladly put my daughter in public school but i don't think it's going to happen.

Well, I'm not a prostitute and I don't have any piercings, and I wouldn't say I'm ADDICTED, but the rest pretty much applies. My public school did a FINE JOB!!!!


Seriously, if the problems are that bad, I think they're going to have a hard time no matter WHAT school the boy attends.

the reading and the homework ahead of time, and get interested in doing well.

There are plenty of kids like that in public schools. But if little Johnny spends so much time in detention, maybe little Johnny should take some PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY for himself and straighten up and fly right.

I suspect that isn't going to happen with Johnny because his parents seem to want to just make excuses for the kid.

What's the district like?

There is a phenomenally huge discrepancy between different districts, even in the same town.

Here in the San Fernando Valley, I know several parents who spend thousands sending their children to religious schools when we have several magnet, charter, and neighborhood schools that are as good or better than those schools.

Letting the teacher's kids skate and picking on their little Nimrod. How did they learn this, is what I'm curious about. Is there actual proof, or are they just making excuses for their son's poor peformance? As far as public schools, I went through the Chicago public school system. No picnic, but I survived and did just fine. And I even sat next to kids who didn't look like me.

The kid's dad got a part time job working for this school, and that's about how the whole thing started. But there's probably some truth to what you say. I'm sincerely hoping the kid's behavioral problems rebound in his new public school environment.

17. That is pretty funny.

I only knew one person who admitted she had gay parents. I was dating her, and a couple months into it she explained her family situation and why I never got invited over. I was a little freaked out at the time, but I got over it and realized her dad was a very nice guy (never met his boyfriend). But I was sworn to secrecy - if word got out that her parents were gay, she said she'd have to leave the school! Not that she was ashamed, but she was afraid of being ostracized by all the kids there.

It's good to know that, at least in some places, it's finally being accepted. :thumbsup:
