I know it's bad form to criticize spelling but...
...If I see one more person spell "lose" as "loose" my head will explode. :grr:

1. What really yanks my chain is people who say 'acrost' instead of
'across'. My own wife does that, but I've given up trying to correct her.

12. I am an "acrost" victim too
the others that just twist my spinal cord into knots are:

"banken" for "embankment" and "irreguardless" (which isn't even a word) in place of "irrespective"

banken... honestly... what the hell is a banken?

6. I know
That's why I'm "venting" somewhat good-naturedly in the Lounge instead of rudely correcting people who make that mistake.

3. I'd also like to see a standardarized "Aunuld"
I've seen about 50 spoof spellings of "Aunuld" - we need a standard!

:)

16. Here it is: "Ah-nult." In German, when a word ends with a 'd', it is
pronounced as a 't'. Don't know why. Don't forget, this is the language where the verb comes at the end of the sentence, instead of after the noun where it belongs.

4. I particularly appreciate..
the "special" people who fling the epithet "looser"
as in "Stop whining, ya bunch of loosers"

Brings a smile to my face every time :)

8. Eh. Some of the brightest people hereabouts make typos
or have repeated spelling errors with a word or two. If I know what they intended and the content of their material is good, I assume I'll get over it.

Personally, I'm amazed at how many folks mistakenly spell 'definately' instead of 'definitely.' Somehow my head doesn't explode, - and I get over it.

9. I was being hyperbolic
No my head won't explode and it certainly didn't ruin my day...just a very, very minor irritation that happened to stick in my brain when I saw it again for the nth time this morning.

15. I sometimes get a bit annoyed at someone's spelling
but then, lo and behold, I'll make a stupid mistake myself. It will bring me down a notch or two. It's a problem with forums, because you usually don't proof your work the way you would a legal brief. I've found myself making stupid errors with to and too, and lose and loose, but not because I don't know the difference. I think I catch most of my errors, but I can go back to a post an hour later and there it is, glaring at me. Grrr.

13. Not spelling, but my SO says "breafases"
instead of "breakfasts" - drives me NUTS. He's a chef, and maybe other people don't notice but I think he sounds like a moran whenever he says it.

I always ask him if he wants a few "breastases" with his "breafases" when I hear him say it....*L* God, I HATE "breafases"!

20. Yep, there are a lot of bad spellers
and lots of bad grammar. I am a copyeditor and some of the posts drive me
up a tree, but I grit my teeth and read on. I know this forum is not about spelling
or grammer, so I restrain myself.

Edited on Thu Aug-21-03 01:39 PM by MiltonLeBerle
Will everyone please familiarize yourself with the particular definition and proper usage of each before posting?

Sample sentence:

I think that THEY'RE in THEIR car over THERE.

Next week, we'll address your, you're and yore.
