18. Kirk Douglas

Set during WW1 Kirk Douglas is a French Battalion commander ordered to take his men over the top and charge the German line. He does so and the casualties are catastrophic.

Convinced that the attack failed not because of German machine gunnery or horrifically poor French soldiery, the General in charge of the battlefield picks three men (at random) from Douglas' battalion and charges them with high-treason for fleeing the battlefield.

What follows is a gripping court martial hearing hammering home the hipocrasy of war and the futility of WW1.

Great film. One of the best films ever made.

The opening scene of the movie was one of the most incredible I've seen... and just watching how brainwashed and unhuman the Marines came was very powerful.

Rumor has it the Marines had to change the behavior of their DIs after this movie was released.

Dr Strangelove and Clockwork Orange are two of the finest movies ever made. Both are unparalleled in their individual genre.

14. I liked Clockwork Orange, but

of all his movies, even 2001, I believe it looks the most dated. My vote is for Strangelove because it is pure genius, with 2001 a close second.

Tough call though. I rank Dr. Strangelove and Clockwork alongside them, and the Shining is my favorite contemporary horror film.

Still, Arthur C. Clarke's visionary future mythology stays with me.

15. The thing that amazes me about Kubrick's films...

...is that they are (for the most part) all in completely different genres. Yet an argument could be made for nearly every one as being among the best films ever in that genre (if not THE best).

Spartacus - Arguably the best Ancient Roman empire epic ever made
Dr. Strangelove - Probably the best political/military satire ever made
Lolita - One of the best movies about forbidden love / interpersonal relations
2001 - Arguably the most ground-breaking Sci-Fi flick ever (a little too obtuse to be the "best" IMHO)
Full Metal Jacket - One of the best Vietnam films ever
Clockwork orange - One of the best "cult" films ever
The Shining - The single best horror film ever, IMHO
The list goes on...

21. Clockwork Orange was my choice...

When the droog libchik was strapped in the chair and forced to viddy loop after loop of "Fair Und Balanced" reportage it made my hair stand on end.
I'm sure if I could've forced myself to watch more war footage, eventually I would have heard "Singin' In The Rain" playing in the background. :puke:

26. Mine too

Saw where someone thought it was "dated". For a 30 year old film, the only things that date it would be the music devices (record albums, mini-cassette tapes), but other than that, I find it quite a chilling tale of a society we seem to be on the verge of becoming.

23. I've never seen a Kubrick film I liked.

I guess I just don't relate to his films. I will admit I haven't seen that many, because many are too gross/violent for me to deal with. The ones I have seen didn't impress me, and I often disliked them very much.

28. A Clockwork Orange, definitely

2001 is certainly more famous and more ingrained into our culture, and I loved and appreciated it. However, it lacked any kind of spirit or life (most likely intentionally). ACO had both. It was funny, gruesome, interesting, and memorable. ACO is a movie I'd think about after watching, love it, and watch it again and again. I wouldn't do that with 2001, I don't think.
