37. I agree
Road to Perdition is his best film appearance -- I liked him playing a "bad guy", even if his "bad guy" was the hero!

But how come "Road to Perdition" wasn't in the poll? I seriously thought it to be one of his best performances.

19. I liked Forrest Gump, but it was a *very* conservative movie
I think of it as the opposite of "Pleasantville" which was also an analogy of America since the 1960s, but with pretty much the opposite message.

23. Sorry, Don't Agree
I think the overarching theme is the continued selflessness of the main character overcoming his circumstances. The luck and the money, and the rest is just window dressing.

The reason why Forrest survives, IMO, is that he's never in it for himself. He loves, unconditionally. He respects others, unconditionally. He cares about others more than he cares about himself.

Those are pretty anti-conservative sentiments, if you ask me.

33. Me, too
Sounds like, when it came out, the righties co-opted it as being 'their' film. It most decidely was not, and it's just another case of those bozos being too stupid or too entrained within their own blinkered little set of paradigms to notice the reality of a property.

All right...Forrest's slaying Private Ryan in the poll (well, by one vote 'til now).

For-rest! Fore-rest! For-rest!

I love that movie. Two REALLY good pop songs in that film.

I like a lot of Hanks stuff, even some of the sappy Meg Ryan stuff. Most everything on that list, and some of the stuff mentioned by others in this thread.

Hated Castaway, though. A 130 minute Federal Express commercial.

26. Figured you would, Prof!
The soundtrack CD is outstanding. If I recall, the guys from Fountains of Wayne wrote a few of the songs. There's a jazz piano combo number called "Time To Blow" that I bet you would like. My favorite song is under the closing credits: "I Need You (That Thing You Do)".

25. Best Moment In That Movie, For Me
At the end when elderly Dottie is walking through the Hall of Fame. She sees the picture of Jimmy Dugan (Jimmy Dugan Hits 58 Homers in 193x). She looks down and sees the two dates for birth and death and he lived to over 80. She saved the guys life.

Penny did a pretty understated job of referencing that. I liked that a lot.

29. Yes, this is his best
he was very funny. He's a likeable guy but his movies are often a little contrived. League of Their Own is a good movie and Hanks was perfect.

Tom Hanks is one of the best actors, not only in acting but
from the heart, he is classy and human,
and his acceptance speach when he won the oscar for Philadelphia
had me in tears.
