Our cats are acting like we abandoned them

We were only gone for three days. You would think we had left them for a year.

1. When we leave our cat at the kennel it takes about a week for him

to come around. He does not like his routine disturbed.

2. Well

We don't have them fo to a kennel, we have a friend or pay the vet who has a house sitting service to come by and check on them. This time we left out enough food and water for them, they were fine. But all of them are following my wife around like little lost kids.

6. My cats get sick every time they go to the vet, so we never board

We fill up 2 or 3 HUGE bowls with food....leave the water dribbling in the bathtub... and have 3 "cat water dispensers...and we still fill their big water bowl too.. We shut the doors to all the bedrooms except ours, and my friend will check on them every other day or so..

We also get a kiddie pool ( a small one) and halfway fill it with litter.. We leave 3 or 4 fresh litter pans in their usual spot, but we put the big one in the big square bathtub...

My friend will remove the smaller ones if they get smelly.. I don't ask her to change them (she's not a cat person).. the smelly pans go out on the back patio til we get back..

We left them for 10 days when we went to Tahiti, and they were just fine..

They would have been scared shitless at a boarding facility..

Dogs are another story.. We used to have someone stay at the house when we had dogs..

We abandoned our two for three days this weekend too. Upon our return, one glanced coolly at us as if to say "oh, I see you're back", the other refuses to leave my side.

Both showed a total reversal of their normal personalities.

4. Ours started before we left

We got dirty looks when we started packing.

5. When we had only one cat,

she'd be crazed with loneliness when we were gone for a couple of days. At the time, neighbors would stop in, freshen food and water, and scoop litter box as needed.

We got a second cat. And then my brother moved in with us, so there's always a human in residence even when most of us are gone. They are very aloof when we return from a trip, but when we're packing they tend to get very anxious, because they have no way of knowing how long we'll be gone.

It never takes more than about thirty minutes for the aloofness to disappear and they're back to normal. But what makes the difference is that they're not completely alone any more. But my brother does complain that they are relentless in their insistence on being around him every minute when we're not there.

8. Well my wife kept tripping over cats Monday

They stayed at her side all day. They just kind of gave me this "OH, you HAD to come back didn't you" look. I am only tolerated in the house.

7. Try owning a dog.

9. We ussually took ours with us on trips.

Depends on the link and mode of transportation we were using. You can board a dog a lot easier. Cause dogs are so happy go lucky they think it is awesome when you come back. They don't care how long you have been gone. Our dog Kate would have to be let out the front door when someone came home from a long trip cause she would get so excited she always peed right after greeting whomever it was.

10. It's bad enough just going to work for the day

When I get home, Smokey (who normally ignores me) immediately screeches to get in my lap. I'm not even allowed to get my coat off. If I attempt to move, the claws come out until she's got her fix. Then she stalks off and goes back to ignoring me.
