Getting Ready to Buy Tivo

1. I cannot live without tivo

When you get tivo, throw away all your vcrs and unused tapes. It is amazing. There is to much to tell. Just get it and you'll never regret it. I have mine with Directtv.

They have a good deal - under $100 for the machine and then about $5 a month for the service. It's definitely worth it.

5. MythTV is open-source TIVO-equivalent with no $ub$cription charge$

. is free, open-source software.
. runs on a normal PC under linux or windoze.
. can make as many simultaneous recordings as you have tuner cards.
. can be remotely controlled via a web interface. Hear about something good on TV, but you're at work? Tell Myth to record it. No problem.
. Has a client-server/architecture so you can watch from any computer, not just the one with the TV tuners.
. nobody gets to track your viewing habits!! (you did know that TIVO does this, didn't you?)

4. DVR's are great

my only complant Is that my ReplayTV Is a little slow to change channels.

I have two RePlayTV's (Factory Renewed - they both appeared to be brand new) (Model 5040) that I bought with Lifetime Service for $300.00 each. I also put a 200 GB harddrive In one of them, I now have over 60 hours 0f recording at high quality.

6. You might consider Dish Network and their PVR

The 500 series recorders have the main features of TIVO plus you get Free Speech TV (Democracy Now! and INN and much more) and Link TV, and is cheaper than cable. I think they have some free installation deals that include the recorder with a year contract.

Thanks everyone for your input. I knew absolutely nothing about TIVOS.

This is what I want to do, I am retired but still don't want to miss taping some things. With my vcr, because I have digital cable, I can only tape when my TV is set to channel 3 and the channel I want to tape is on. So it is a mess. I can't set to record and leave town.

TIVO could help me right?

Now, if I have comcast digital cable can I order tivo through my cable company?

I thought I could go to a store and buy a TIVO set just like a VCR- yes/no?

Thanks for helping, I don't want to mess up. I usually tape about 20 hours a month.
