Can't Pat Boone just fade away?

May 28, 2004 -- PAT Boone says he'll never watch CBS again because "60 Minutes II" aired images of the Abu Ghraib prison abuse. The squeaky-clean crooner claims that showing those pictures has made the U.S. more of a target than ever. "For me, CBS has become 'the enemy within,' and I hope never to watch the network again," Boone wrote in a letter to conservative NewsMax.com. Boone the famously bland singer who was once criticized for singing cleaned-up versions of songs made popular by black singers (he changed Fats Domino's "Ain't That a Shame" to "Isn't That a Shame") goes on to say: "I think most Americans ought to reflect on the results of their irresponsible and unpatriotic behavior and perhaps narrow their viewing options by one network. The next time America or Americans suffer at the hands of terrorists, thank CBS."

6. Hey, anybody remember when Pat Boone ...

Did an album of covers of heavy metal and hair-metal songs? You know, the music that, if we believe people like him, were/are responsible for violence, drug use and premature teen sexual exploration?

I doubt anybody would argue against my theory that he did it because he'd become culturally irrelevant (actually, there's probably great argument against his ever truly having been culturally relevant, but play with me, here), and maybe had some bills to pay. So he put on some bike leathers and hopped on the coattails of the hair metal movement, even while his peers (and Tipper Gore) were railing against the whole genre of music as bannable.

This rant against CBS of his got me thinkin' -- he's probably one of those guys who blames everything on the great cultural decline of America. So what the hell business does he have whining about CBS when he, himself was responsible for mainstreaming hedonism back in the late 80s/early 90s?
