Poll question: Do you wear glasses (or contacts)?
Edited on Tue Jun-01-04 02:54 PM by undisclosedlocation
You might guess that I've been looking at the gallery.:D

For about 10 minutes, Choice #6 was: 'Just for reading the 1st half of each Top Ten List item on Letterman (wait, that's just George W Bush).' This actually happened during the '00 campaign; damn idiot apparently thought nobody would notice him taking off and putting back on his glasses every 10 seconds. Or maybe Letterman was supposed to take the camera off him. (Go Dave!)

Didn't leave an Other slot because I already have 10 choices for what's basically a yes/no question. If I missed something, feel free to use the Reply function.

3. Good thought-- both in real life and for the poll
I'll probably replace Dubya with something like "Not anymore; had Lasik surgery"
Thanks!

2. Mostly contacts for distance vision.
Up to about 12-18" my vision is perfect. Beyond that, it stinks. I wear contacts most of the time, but wear my glasses when allergies are acting up, or when I feel like sporting specs.

4. I've Been Wearing Glasses Since October of 1960 (Age 7)
Edited on Tue Jun-01-04 02:53 PM by CO Liberal
Mrs. Pierson, my 2nd grade teacher, made everyone sit in alphabetical order. With my last name starting with a "Z", that put me in the back of the room. When she saw me squinting to see the blackboard, Mrs. Pierson sent me to the school nurse, who did a quick eye test and send a note home suggesting that I get my eyes checked.

As a result, I was the first kid in my class to get glasses, and was teased a lot because of it. Thankfully, Mrs. Pierson notices a lot of other kids squinting, because over the next few weeks more kids got sent to the nurse. And about ten of them came back after Christmas Vacation wearing glasses. I was no longer alone....

She got hers in the first grade. I was the latest in my family, when I got mine in the 7th grade. Incidentally, the first day I went to school with my glasses on, someone asked me if I had had glasses for a long time and had been wearing contacts before.

Hopefully, I'm gonna get contacts this summer, if I can afford them.

9. Since age 7
Though early on I rarely wore them due to the stigma attached. Eventually things looked so fuzzy, I was forced to wear them all the time. Now that I bike every where, it's good to have specs (even if they are prescription ashtrays) just to keep the bugs and grit out of my eyes.

Darn these over 40 eyes! I wear contacts for seeing (driving, web surfing, watching television). Then I wear half glasses when I need to read print.

11. Full disclosure: I'm legally blind (in Denmark)
or so I was told. Of course the guy telling me was an American living there who was trying to get me to join the NSA Buddhists (Everybody: NAM MYOHO RENGE KYO) by claiming that he'd had vision like mine but since taking up chanting had had his myopia clear up completely, so his testimony might be considered to be, uh, less than reliable.

However, as I have a fairly severe astigmatism, my eyesight can't quite be corrected to 20/20, so in the strictest sense I'm legally blind here, too. But as it's no disability, I don't see any point to being so declared.

13. Just had my eyes checked for the first time in 20 years last Dec.
Only other trip to the eye doctor was at age 7 or 8, when the school nurse thought I had a lazy eye (I didn't). Definitely an interesting experience this time around, as I didn't remember anything from the first visit. Took absolutely forever, because I went to the eye clinic attached to my university's optometry school, and the intern/student who did my exam was obviously not yet all that familiar with the equipment -- good thing I'm real good at keeping my head still (must be from all those hours in the orthodontist's chair :-)). Apparently I'm 20/20 in one eye, 20/30 in the other, and 20/15 with both; presumably my brain made some pretty good connections!

Speaking of vision-related brain stuff, my mom just got glasses a few years ago; she was sent to the optometrist when she failed the vision test for driver's license renewal. It turned out she had perfect vision in one eye...and 20/200 in the other! The only symptom she had noticed at that point was a bit of difficulty reading road signs at night. The doctor said this had probably developed so gradually that her brain was able to compensate for much of the loss. Now she has glasses that are clear plastic on one side and major correction on the other.

14. I am depended on corrective lenses
I used to say that I was close to legally blind but met several people that have a lot worse vision than mine. It turns out that although I need more correction than most people I am only about halfway blind as far as correctable vision goes. Still, I am sort of like Velma without my lenses. "I cannot see anything without my glasses."
I wore glasses since the age of 7. I got contacts when I was 11. I usually wear contacts but my eyes don't seem to be as tolerant to them in the past few months and my insurance only pays for an eye exam every other year and it is my off year.

22. I usually wear contacts
My vision is 20/300, so I have to wear something (only 32, so I don't need reading glasses) at all times. Usually I wear my contacts during the day and glasses at night. I think only one person her has ever even seen me a picture with my glasses on because rarely do I like to wear them anyway. I find them annoying especially because my eyes are light in color and light-sensitive, so I'd rather have my contacts and sunglasses without have to switch around.

30. I was about 20/450 and very astigmatic before LASIK
since I had the surgery, I've been 20-20. I'm like a poster child for LASIK surgery; it's literally changed my life. I can do things like play racquetball, scuba dive and snorkel, etc., without special prescription goggles. I can get up in the middle of the night and actually FIND the bathroom and read the clock. I can wear normal, off-the-shelf sunglasses. I can walk on the beach without worrying about windblown sand scouring my contacts opaque. I love having eyes that WORK!!! (I'd worn glasses since 1968 and contacts since 1975, and my LASIK was almost 5 years ago.)

32. Contacts mostly
Though I wear glasses at night, on weekends, and when I want to look lik Tina Fey. :)

I got glasses when I was 7, and soft contacts at age 11. I went to rigid gas permeable lenses when I went to college and never looked back!
