11. Small pond in Spring Church PA. Biggest damn goldfish I ever caught
Just saw something on TV the other night.

Somebody was talking about how a goldfish will grow to fit the environment. Reminded me of the small pond near my old family homestead.

"Legend" had hit that somebody put their goldfish in it.

They were some big suckers, though. Caught and released.

7. They're OK if you get the "Mud Vein" out
An old black gentleman told me that once. "Them carp's good eatin' if y'git that mud vein outta 'em..."

I gave him the 12-pounder I had just hauled in. He was happy.

I didn't know about the mud vein, and frankly, it really didn't sound like something I wanted to learn about.

8. Good fighters aren't they.
They're fun to catch, but like you I wouldn't want to eat one of them. I don't even know where the mud vein is, so likely I would cut it and spoil the meat anyway.

I mostly catch and release so it's just for fun for me. I'll take a fight with a big, beefy carp or catfish any day.

17. Grew up on the Ohio River so Carp are second nature
Edited on Tue Jun-01-04 07:11 PM by Ksec
bottom feeders or trash fish. I make the best doughball for miles around. Now I try Not to catch Carp although they fight like Hell. They always tasted like mud regardless of that vein being removed. Whats that weigh ? 20 Lbs or so.

I like to go after Smallmouth and Walleyes now. I caught a 20 lb Muskie out of the Ohio last year, its really cleaned up.

18. Marinate them in some dill sauce, like catfish
It'll take the mud flavor out of them.
The flavor is actually caused by a blue-green algae in the water. It's water-soluble, so soaking them in a marinade will help.
