1. Was it a lot of work?
How long did it take you? More details after you're rested. :)

2. Lot's of digging
Edited on Tue Jun-01-04 04:44 PM by bif
It took me about three hours to dig the hole. It was a pain because it's one of those plastic, ponds and the hole has to be real close in size and shape to the pond. But it's done. I filled it with water, put in a couple of plants and now the goldfish. I've heard a pump isn't needed if you have the right balance of plants and fish.

3. My son has two at his house
The one in the back he dug the hole and did the plastic liner bit...with a pump. The front he did the molded plastic - don't know if he used a pump on that one. He's had the most beautiful Koi fish for a few years but, they either died or the cat ate them!

Get some snails too, they clean the algae off the plastic. yuk

What happens if you find you need a pump will it be easy to install?

I wanted one but, it's work and I'm at the point that a total concrete yard is looking good

6. Putting a pump in would be a real pain
Because the pond is near the back of our backyard. I would have to drill a hole in our house and run electricity back there. (Or have an electrician do it) I'd also have to dig a trench the whole way.. But I have heard about solar powered pumps.

7. I'd love to do that someday....
Used to have regular aquarium inside, but got tired of that.

'Course, as long as I'm living in an apartment, I don't have a yard to put a pond in. :-(

8. get the biggest pump and filter you can afford.
it's worth it.

and don't feed the fish too much, primarily at night, so that they'll eat the algae.

15. You don't need a pump as long as the pond is balanced
Edited on Wed Jun-02-04 09:26 AM by mrmcd
I only use a pump to run a waterfall. No filtration. I do not feed the fish in my pond, there is plenty of material for them to eat. I have to thin the population down every few years or there are just too many fish.

On edit: I use a sonic animal repeller to keep the Raccoons away. It works very well.

16. What kind of fish do you have?
My problem is the water is only 18 inches deep and I live in Michigan. I understand the water depth needs to be 3 feet for the fish to winter over.
