Speaking of surfing - DU Snowboarders/surfers
I used to snowboard, I actually used to race the bastards. Nothing I loved more than finding a path of hard snow, or ice, and going straight down as fast as I could.

Can you translate snowboarding to surfing easily?

Man, I ain't touched a board in four fucking years..time to end that shameful streak, as a British Columbian, how can I not?

1. I dunno. As a youth, I surfed in the 60's. I skied in the 70's and 80's.
Snowboarding is a new phenomenon for me.

2. Not really except for balance and steering
but that's where it ends...falling off a surfboard is NOT the same as the manner in which one would dump on a snowboard..when I ski'd and snowboarded, I would always do my best to fall to the side and let my skis slow me down....on a wave, you're better off falling back..but more often than not you don't get a choice.

3. Nothing like skateboarding,
where you can jump off your board before you run into shit. :-)

I haven't tried snowboarding, though. Or surfing.

Never shoulda stopped, sold my board to buy my sister an xmas present, that was the end.

6. Some of your skillz will translate...
Your ankles will work slightly differently for turning, but other than that, the basics of your sense of balance will be useful.

I've done skateboarding, rollerskates, water skiing, in-line skates, alpine skiing, and wakeboarding. Some are more similar than others...
