I read a great biography of Vivian Vance a couple years ago. Evident Frawley was a major asshole. He was fond of farting during shooting. He was drunk most of the time, and was mean as a snake.

Of course Vivian Vance was crazy as a loon, and Lucy herself was evidently one of the most humorless people ever to become a comedian.

but I was quite surprised when I'd read a number of accounts about how distinctly UNfunny Lucille Ball was off-camera. Her sense of comedic timing was impeccable, and she could do slapstick with the best of the great comics.

It's just hard to imagine somebody with no real sense of humor could be so good at it.
