SPSS users, quick question

Ok, I am trying to do something I haven't done in a long time 'cuz my dataset normally doesn't have this type of variable. I need to filter out cases that some reasearchers did and keep the remaining cases. Each researcher is assigned an ID. It seems that I should be able to go to Select Cases, Select cases if condition satisfied, then define my cases by ReschID{fieldname} = (1001, 1003, 1005, 1008)?

Where am I out to lunch?

...last time I used SPSS was back in college, and it was SPSS for DOS. :D

2. Yep, that was the last time I used this function

and it seems like how I did it then. :grr: the amount of time I have spent on this I could've gone into Excel and deleted the offending cases by hand...

3. Are you getting a particular error message?

Or are you just not getting the desired results?

4. Yeah, I get an error, but I have ignored it

I think its by way of the server set up here - I get a similar one whenever I open a dataset, except I get that error in the output screen, or viewer. Anyway, the error is:

Undefined error #4305 Cannot Open text file "SPSS.err"; No such file or directory.

My guess is it is going to the error file to tell me what the problem is, but since this program is on a server and shared, the link to the error file doesn't work...

5. So you're getting that error whenever you try to select the cases?

First thing I thought of when you mentioned your difficulties was the ever-beloved "syntax error." Gotta love SPSS... :eyes:

6. Nothing

the screen blinks like it considers doing something, then it gives me that error. Nothing occurs as far as selecting cases. It does seem like there might be an actual flaw in the linkages to the dataset. We recently went through the dreaded server upgrade - you know the one - where everything gets scrambled...

Yes, I am quite familiar with the "syntax error" LOL.

7. Yeah... sounds like it is related to the server upgrade.

It's so much fun when they do that, and all of the programs that are shared on that server get FUBARed! On the plus side... if you can get the computer to recognize where the data set is located, you're doing the right thing to separate out the unwanted info.

Wish I could have been of more help... looks like you'll have to take it up with your tech people.

Sin tax... don't they have one of those in Vegas? :P

8. Yeah, I tried some other functions that have to go back to the org set

and it looks like that is the problem - bad linkages. Appreciate the help.

10. yep, still causing problems, I am doing it manually in Excel

12. I use it daily

it beats the crap out of doing it by hand!

That and it has improved a bunch since the DOS versions and even the last few versions show improvement.

But yeah, the smart people got jobs where they never do stat!
