Who makes Schlitz beer?
Someone told me Miller owned the brand, but the Miller site doesn't claim it, and I can't find any "home" website for the Schlitz brand.

I'm only curious because the local store only sells it in cans, and the guy doesn't think it's even available in bottles.

The can itself says nothing but 'Jos. Schlitz Brewing Co., Milwaukee, WI.

Yes, I drink it sometimes. I think it's better than it used to be, but in any case, I don't have much choice in this neighborhood. No Genesee Cream Ale!

I think Pabst only hires contract brewers now, so someone else really brews it...

9. There is no Pabst brewery any more.
Stroh's acquired Pabst (as well as Schlitz).

Then Stroh's brewery shut down.

Miller makes Stroh's, Pabst, and Schlitz now.

The brand is still separate (hence, no mention on Miller's site), but Miller makes Schlitz. Miller also makes Leinenkugels, though. One thing I'll give 'em -- they keep the "outside" beers they brew true to form.

11. i think this is the correct answer
Miller and Anheuser Busch own most of the breweries nationwide, they bought up all the smaller ones, they are now subsidiaries or divisions. I believe they kept all the recipes the same, they just own them

Now, who owns DUFF?

17. They've got Old Style too.
La Crosse, Wisconsin's "world's largest six-pack" has been painted over, but happily, a new, locally owned brewer took over the G. Heilemann Brewery. Last time I was there, they were in the process of painting one of their own labels on the six-pack.

3. I'll ask
A buddy of mine is a professional brew master. I'll ask him. Schlitz went out of business years ago after some bean counter kept cutting back on "unnecessary" costs such as ingredients and lagering time. The result was a lousy beer that tended to get mucous in it, like beery snot. Hard to believe in the early 50s it was the biggest brewer in the US!

15. My dad drank Schlitz.
Whadda sucky beer. Really. It had a sharp, bitter aftertaste. I can't believe anyone would find that beer enjoyable. But it was popular in the 50s and 60s.

19. Is there anyone here whose dad drank (or drinks) good beer?
My dad drank Miller Low Life, Kingsbury (shudder) and sometimes Blatz (spew). My fiancee's dad drank Leinenkugel's original (not bad, but I like their other beers better). (Both still alive and well, happy to say, but neither is a beer drinker anymore.)

My theory is that everyone dislikes the beer their dad drank.

I will give him this though: He had a seperate refrigerator with a keg in it and a tap through the door.

Probably still drinks Bud. I don't know.

28. My Dad's favorite beer was called
"Whatever is on Sale"

Red White and Blue
Strohs
PBR
Shaefers (With one 'f')
Meister Brau
Carlings Black Label

Putrid stuff...

But hell, there was a time when my roomie and I drank nothing but Fox Deluxe long necks in the returnable bottles.

31. Yes, I too, had a skimpy beer budget in school.
You learn to maximize your drinking dollars. Mine was Nastygansett Imperial Quarts. Until I found Knick Naturals @ $4.00/case.

10. What a lineup on the Pabst site.
Old Milwaukee, Lone Star, Old Style, Colt 45, Blatz, Carling Black Label, Champale(!), Falstaff, Pearl, Piels, Schaefer, Schmidt's, Ballentine.

They seem to specialize in buying up brands that developed a really bad reputation!

13. Hmmm, different Schmidt's from the one I remember in
Philadelphia. Theirs is from the Great Northwest. Dang, that Philly Schmidt's was some dangerous stuff.

I guess I have a soft spot for Schlitz. That's what we used to get somebody to buy for us before we were old enough to buy it (or drink it) for ourselves. Then we'd cruise around, usually smoking a doob or two, with Led Zep or Bad Company cranked up on the 8 track in the Torino.

No regrets. Glad I moved on.

18. Yes! Schmidt's had the fantastic outdoor scenes!
I remember those cans well, and used to have a bunch, back when beer can collecting was hot shit.

And I'll also always remember the Hamm's commercials and the lighted displayers in bars - all those fantastic outdoor scenes. And that beer-drinking bear!

33. I had a can of Old Style with no printing whatsoever on the can
it was pure white all the way around.

And a half-filled can of something - I think it might actually have been Schlitz! But I can't remember for sure.

Save the tabs, bend them over together into chains. I think I was wearing a German "Iron Cross" pendant at the time.

14. Nasty stuff, that Schlitz.
I remember seeing pallets of Schlitz in the hot, baking sun at the supply depot at Cam Rahn Bay. I was told it had been baking there for six months. Then, as predictable as the monsoon rains, Schlitz was the only beer available in our club. Oh dear God, it was bad. Put us on whiskey and cheap wine until we could do a San Miguel run to Subic Bay in one of the P-2s.

Perhaps it doesn't deserve it.

Are there beers that come in cans only, no bottles?

26. Plenty of beers are available in cans only.
Look down at the cheap shit end of the cooler. Canning is cheaper than bottling, and the brewery can cover up a multitude of sins.
