Favorite bourbon
Edited on Fri Jun-04-04 08:35 PM by galadrium
For me it would have to be Maker's Mark. However, I just drank some Woodford Reserve and it is damn good too.

2. I like Woodford Reserve better
But let's be honest, it's like comparing Jaguars to Porsches, right? :-) Both are excellent.

3. Either Maker's Mark or Knob Creek.
Maker's Mark most of the time, Knob Creek if I want a little more kick (100 proof vs 90). Basil Hayden's is pretty damned good, too...rather spicy, and a bit different from your average bourbon (comes from the use of rye in the mash).

Of the second-rank bourbons, Ezra Brooks is probably the best, but I generally drink premium stuff, because, let's face it, it IS better.

5. The finest bourbon in the world is Wild Turkey Russell's Reserve 10-year.
For a weekly tipple? Maker's Mark or Turkey 101.

Cheap daily quaff? Old Crow.

It's my fave as well.

Though I must admit that I really like Rip Van Winkle too.

12. I like Van Winkle's rye A LOT.
The best part is, neither my favorite bourbon nor my favorite rye is horribly expensive. Both Russell's Reserve and Van Winkle rye are under $25 at Discount Liquor in Milwaukee.

Having a Platte Valley corn whiskey on the rocks as we write.

7. being an adopted Kentuckian, I hate to say this, but....
..bourbon really sucks.

I find it undrinkable.

this from someone who lived close enough to bourbon distilleries to smell the mash cooking.

9. Old Fitzgerald On 7th Street Rd
They tore most of those buildings down.

What I find odd is most Kentucky Bourbon is distilled in dry counties.

24. Brown-Forman Is Still There
But it's mainly offices now. The business grew quite a bit and moved most of the bourbon operations out in the state.

...its a pretty legit Kentucky bourbon.

Makers Mark is the real deal too, for a small distillery (I took a tour of it once).

19. No Bookers fans? Knob Creek, another fave.
And, don't laugh, for every day, Evan Williams. I like manhattans, and Evan Williams certainly does the trick with a little sweet vermouth and bitters, a twist to garnish.

Any other Manhattan afficionadoes out there?

27. George Dickel Old No.12 or Old Rip Van Winkel 10-year-old
If you like Tennessee style, the Dickel is way smoother than anything Jack Daniels is turning out. Fruity nose, very clean finish, a little bit spirity, but hey, with 90 proof bourbon what do you expect? I bought a bottle of this on a recent business trip to Nashville... which was kinda silly, since I can buy it in RI! Cracked it open with some buddies the other night and, well, it didn't last long!

The Van Winkle distillery adds a touch or wheat to replace some of the rye in the traditional Kentucky sour mash recipie. The result is subtle, but remarkable. These guys crank out a bunch of boutique bourbons of various ages, and all are wonderful (the family reserve is 23 years old, and indesribably delicious and expensive). But the nice thing is you don't have to shell out the big bucks for one of their limited edition offerings, their basic 10-year-old is the best working man's bourbon out there, bar none ($20 for 750ml). Gobs of vanilla and honey, as smooth and easy to drink as chocolate milk. You never hear of this company, and have to scrounge to find their products in most cities. But this is the #1 ranked bourbon in taste testings around the world. Worth the hunt.

BTW, I used to love Makers Mark many years ago, although their style is a bit smoky and flinty for my taste. But I feel they have suffered greatly for their popularity, and their quality has dropped to the point where I won't buy MM anymore. Not trying to dis you MM fans! Just suggesting that if you think MM is the kitty's titties, you owe it to yourself to try Dickel Old No. 12 and Old Rip Van Winkle. Just try 'em!

28. George Dickel isn't bourbon
Dickel and Jack Daniel's are Tennessee Whiskeys per BATF designation.

In a Tennessee Whiskey still, the last station is a huge vat of charcoal; the charcoal vat is nonexistent in a bourbon still.

Fun fact: Dickel's distillery and Jack Daniel Distillery are on the same road in Tennessee.
