3. this is totally silly
but once I was in Toronto with a group of people I worked with. My friend and I went off on our own and did all kinds of alt-stuff: book stores, women comedians, leather/bondage store ( just for amusement!), pool playing, bars, etc. Totally avoided all the conventional "touristy" stuff such as the sports arenas, since I had done all that other visits. Anyway, I get all excited near a record store, since I see a sign "Meet Don Cherry" assuming it was the great jazz trumpeter. (That is how I think) I was crushed to see a short, fat, white man yelling into a microphone. Hope that is not too insulting to Canadians, but I would have preferred to see the other Don Cherry.

Anyway, just thought I would tell you that since I am such a hockey fan ( sarc)- the Penguins are terrible this year. :)

5. Multikulti
I would have thought of jazz trumpeter Don Cherry also. I never heard of the hockey Don Cherry until now. That's pretty bizarre, like finding that there's a wrestler named Herbie Hancock or something.

The "real" Don Cherry's album "Multikulti" is one of my favorites. I had the pleasure of seeing him perform a few times, once with Ornette Coleman, another time as a duo with Nana Vasconcelos, and also in the wonderful trio Codona. He was a good pianist, also, and was a very good interpreter of Thelonious Monk.

OK, I'll go away now. Sorry for the off-topic comments. I found your post via a search of DU for jazz posts.

Don Cherry and Don Cherry: extremely separated at birth:

11. Don't know, but
I heard a sportscaster back when I lived in Pittsburgh say that Don Cherry had about as much credibility in the sports world as Vince McMahon, so there you go.
