how does a dual layer DVD work?

I just bought Schindler's List and its a dual DVD. I have no idea how a dual layer DVD works. Yeah I am stupid so what heh.

I think the information is coded onto the disc in 2 seperate layers to hold more data.

3. It takes ten paces and blows away your regular DVDs
It's dual layer.

It works by doubling the amount of data available, putting the bits on 2 levels which are accesible only by a DVD that can adjust the intensity of its reading laser, assuming your DVD is new enough to support it.

10. Two layers sandwiched together,
the first layer is semi-transparent, and the laser can be focused to different depths, depending on which layer is being read.
