3. IMO, PDAs are useless
I've owned like 20 of them, heh. They were amusing for playing solitaire during class, but ask yourself, do you need either? If it's just for a toy, you might get a Gameboy instead.

Or, if you're one of those crazy people that actually uses theirs, I'd get the cheapest unit you can unless you really need the additional "multimedia" (read: porn and MP3) functions of the higher-end units.

5. I disagree...LOVE my PDA...
It's an old HP Jornada, and Carly dropped the ball when HP merged with compaq. But I download e books, keep addresses, listen to music and have all my own writing stored in Pocket Word. Gone are the days when I filled spiral notebooks with beginnings of the Great American Novel, now I have a fold-up keyboard that just attaches to the PDA and I never have to write with a pen again!

The newer ones also allow you to expand more easily. You can download a GPS program, get wireless internet, store digital photos, and my friend can even compress DVD's from disc to compact flash card on his Dell. It's great if you travel, especially with the new luggage weight rules, you don't have to schlepp so much crap or take your laptop out of its bag every time you go thru airport security.

I agree about Dell being Bushites--but I'm sure Bill Gates is gonna vote for him as well and we can't get away Microsoft! As for Palm, if you go on Circuit City's website and download customer reviews of any PDA that interests you, it's really helpful. I've bought a lot of techie toys like that (and not necessarily from Circuit City) so give it a try.

Ultimately, it all depends on what you want it for as to what you decide. I've had mine for 3 years and it does everything I need it to.

6. Axims are badly designed rubbish - the Stylus alone drives people crazy.
The Axim has this little rectangular thing that, when held, screams "DO NOT USE ME!"

I like the Compaq iPaq, but that's HP so I refuse to recommend them for the future.

I prefer PocketPC devices to Palm, though I gather Linux-based devices will be out soon. My next PDA will be based on Linux...

7. I'm pretty happy with my (Sony) Symbian Smartphone
If you want something Palm-based: The Sony Clie PDAs will be discontinued - there might be a chance for a bargain.

9. Love my HP iPAQ
The only reason I bought it, though, was so I could slap Linux on it and fool around.

Nothing like running apache off your PDA, I tell you what.

11. Check out Handhelds.Org
http://www.handhelds.org

It's a little dicey to put it on, but it's pretty friggin sweet when it's done.

Use the OPIE (KDE-based) at all costs. The GNOME-based version (forget the name) is very flaky and a PITA to use. Put aside all KDE/GNOME loyalties, no matter what.

15. IPAQ 1940
I bouight an Ipaq 1940, and it's a great machine. It's a budget Ipaq, not top of the line, but can do just about anything you need, and can add storage disk to hold a lot more.
Plus it's really small and light, so you are more likely to actually take it with you and use it.

This is a good time to find a nbargain on one, as newer models coming out.
