I compare it to broadband after having dialup. It's not necessary, but it makes a world of difference.

2. Other...

DVRs, including TiVo, can be very usefull for people who love television. But the only show I'm addicted to is Stargate SG-1 (after Voyager and DS9 ended...) but I don't even watch it that much.

So while I like the technology, I don't have a use for it, and could care less about having one.

4. I like the idea of TiVo,

but with only 5 broadcast channels and no interest in getting cable, I must admit I don't much see the point for myself.

Do any of the TiVo users here have privacy concerns? There was some talk of it a few years ago.

yes, they do collect data, even down to the button presses and their timing.


but, they claim in the privacy policy that it's not personally identifiying, and I belive them. They even have my email address, and the spam from them is infrequent, and I didn't notice any increase in outside spam.


if you don't watch tv, tivo makes about as much sense as getting broadband if you don't use the internet.

5. Don't have it but want it....

with my new job I am working the 3am-Noon shift. I actually enjoy the hours, but it means i have to go to bed at 8pm at the latest. This means I miss a lot of stuff I enjoy.
I do have one question for TIVO owners though. Currently the way my system is hooked up with digital cable I can only tape what I am watching. With TIVO is there usch a set up that lets your ecord whatever, while watching something else? INcluding Premium channels such as HBO?

with stand alone tivo, there is one tuner, and one encoder, so you can only record from one channel at a time

You can however, record one channel and watch another live without tivo (just normal tv) by going to standby... this still records, but works like the tv/vcr button on a vcr

if you have directTV, there is tivo with two tuners, no encoders. The sattelite stream is written directly to disk, and you can record two shows at once, or record one show and watch another live with tivo (buffer for "trick play" features like pausing live tv, or instant replay)

You can record premium channels just like any other channel

6. I love the Tivo...

in fact I really wish now that my car radio had that function of being able to pause a live feed, rewind, etc. as well as being able to record on the fly.

I actually have Timer Warner's DVR which is better than the Tivo because you can record on 2 channels at once.

and I'm a Mac user (also use Windows), so I can understand your sentiment.

Of course, I also must say that the Tivo I used was the old version not the newer version that they have now. and I haven't ever seen the direcTV version of Tivo.

I've used a Tivo for a long time and although I do have to say that I like the button layout on the Tivo remote better, I prefer the menuing in TW's DVR much better than Tivo's.

Much like using the Mac, I don't have to think about using the TW DVR, because it is integrated with the listings navigation functions that I am used to using. Also, I wasn't fond of the constant knocking sound whenever I pushed a button on the Tivo. Although perhaps those issues have all been solved with the newer Tivoes.

I haven't actually used that DVR, so I shouldn't knock it. I've known people that have had the dish one and some digital cable one, and they sucked.

I agree that tivo's menus aren't layed out the best. I think the difference is that other dvrs (I don't' know about your's specifically) have you record individual programs, while tivo gets all the new episodes (or all, if you want) of any show you tell it to.

Many of the non tivo dvrs are just a VCR that has an unlimited tape that you program with an on screen guide. Tivo is a paradigm shift, where programming consists of you telling it what you like.


as for the versions, 2.5 was a huge leap from the original tivo software (which was still revolutionary)

27. The TW DVR that I use...

does work like that. I can record all the episodes of a program or just new episodes (not reruns) of a program. Plus I can prioritize recordings to be deleted first when I run out of space to record. It's quite robust in terms of functionality. Much more than just a VCR.

I agree the Tivo is a paradigm shift. But not only from the standpoint of being able to do your own programming, but just in the recording functions. Being able to pause live video being the most profound, imho.

other reasons why I prefer the TW DVR is that it is cheaper than the Tivo that I was using, there's only one box, I pay for all cable, internet and DVR to one company, and I don't need to use a phone line.

I love the Tivo programming guide, and I just can't go back to the way Time-Warner does it...

I never was a big fan of the Tivo interface. Although that's probaly because I am so used to the Time Warner interface. It seems more natural to me. But then again, I always just used the older version of Tivo.

Well, I really want our relationship to move forward, but Tivo just won't commit. Also, I suspect Tivo is watching someone else's television. I came home yesterday really looking forward to watching yesterday's Frontline and found Sean Hannity on Tivo's hard drive! I'm so devastated!

I was a regular on the tivo forum (not the lounge) for six months or so after I got my Tivo.. until I learned everything I could (never got around to putting in the network card and tivoweb. my roommate did it to his, and it didn't seem worth it). Bullwinkle was cool (went to work for replay???), tivopony was a lame replacement at first, but I got to like him just fine.

It was one of the first, if not the first, Tivo. A Phillips 40-hour.

15. I had it and loved it

But they don't do HD, so we had to go with the very inferior CableCo version of a DVR without the search features or any of that. When we got our HDTV, we called them and asked when they'd be doing an HD version of their recorder and they said "at least two years." That's a shame, but for sure when they finally do get around to making one, we'll sign up again.

I don't have hdtv, so I've only just seen it in the store, and at an acquances house one time. The picture is good, but I'd rather have a lower quality picture and tivo than a high quality picture with no instant replay and commercial breaks.
