1. Grateful Dead, 10/15/77,

the soundboard recording of a sweet show at Moody Coliseum at SMU in Dallas I was honored to attend.

Jerry morphed into an alligator on stage! Man, I miss the good old days.

31. GD at SMU was rather anachronistic, even in 77.

The basketball arena never had such a good time.

The show being general admission, a buddy of mine and I got there hours early so we could save spots up in the front row of the stands Phil side to have an unobstructed view of Jerry playing. It was one of the greatest Dead shows I ever saw, of the 38 I got to attend. (I never got to go "on tour" so my show count is pretty low. Did go to London to see them in '90, which was a huge high point. Halloween night, Wembly Arena, Jerry sang "Weirwolves of London" for the encore.)

Man, I miss Jerry!!

I just bought a used copy of "The best of Eric Burdon and the Animals 1966-68" cd today and just listened to that song!
What timing, it's got other great songs like "San Fransiscan Nights", "When I Was Young", "Hey Gyp" on it....

Also I bought a couple of cool live cds by the Fall, which makes over 35 the number I have by them...both are new to me, and both have Brix on them...!

No, this is kind of a weird cd...Came out on Polydor in 1991 (reading the liner notes)...Only original Animals lp they cull from is "Animalization", the rest is from the Eric Burdon and the Animals band...Here is the list of songs, in order...

The whole cd is QUITE enjoyable! Eric Burdon had a great voice!

Ok, here are some "topics" I might be able to offer....

The very first record I bought, when I was 12, was Eric Burdon and War's "Spill the Wine"...in 1970 I believe...Picture Sleeve and all for 69 cents!
In the late 80s I was put on the guest list for a show by the "Eric Burdon Band" by an ex-college roommate of mine, who by that time worked in the music business for local promoters and as a roadie...It was a great show, lots of people there and he did a lot of the old Animals standards...After the show, I got to go backstage and meet Eric! I had a copy of the first Animals lp. "House of the Rising Sun", he got quite a kick out of seeing it and told a few anecdotes (I'm afraid I cannot remember any, as I was at least two sheets to the wind by then)...He signed it in big letters "Eric Burdon 1988" and drew a little Hitler moustache under Chas Chandler's nose!...He came across as a nice guy and I still have that album!
and this probably has nothing to do with the Animals but...when I was in the Air Force I went through training at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, MS...only 50 miles away from New Orleans, and a group of us would try to get there at least once a month (weekends were free)...I have pictures of me standing in front of some massage parlor called "The House of the Rising Sun" on Bourbon Street but that was when I was young and naive...back before I knew it was a traditional song from the early 1900s!

So there ya go!

I have a Bible that Peter Tosh and she autographed.

Her inscription: "god and alexander the great, patti smith".

She is an uncompromised poet and rocker. That show will be inspirational.

10. Saw her in 79 or 80, and again in 2000 in San Fran at Filmore

It is the only rock show that I get goosebumps thinking about. It was anniversiary of Garcia's death. They did Darkstar. Both verses w/ long jam in between. 12-14 min long? JG's face looming now and again from within psychedelia projected on rear screen. People with tears rolling down their faces. Me included. Big finish. What would have been final thump of Darkstar becomes downbeat of Not Fade Away (I recall it that way at least. Will hunt for set list....)

15. I love Patti Smith!!!

There was a classic show she did at a place in Eugene, Oregon in 1978 called "The Place"...It was simulcast on a local FM radio station, I've heard tapes of that show (I'm sure it was bootlegged)...I tried to get in but I couldn't because I was undeage and got carded!

I finally saw her a couple of years ago and she was great! Pretty much the original band, she mixed old and new and it was a great show!

I saw her on a late night talk show awhile back (Letterman?) she was quite garrolous and funny, she said she always wanted to be a guest host for Johnny Carson but never got considered...I think she would have been great at it!

Patti rocks, I love her!

30. The Bible

I got it originally to get Peter Tosh's autograph when I was doing a radio interview with him in 1978. It is a classic red leather bound King James version, the version Rastafarians use. Peter's inscription is "Rasta far I, Almighty God, Peter Tosh"

Around the same time I got to meet Patti and got her to sign it then. Subsequently, I got Peter's son, who is also a performer, to autograph it as well. It sits on my meditation alter with my quartz crystals that I dug at the Coleman mine in Arkansas.

I know, I'm a freak. I guess no one will take me seriously around here now, as if they ever did.
