What's your DU pet peeve?
My big one is the concept that criticism of an opinion is somehow oppressing the opiner's free speech rights. Every time we get into a big argument here, one poster will eventually play this card, and claim that the other side is attempting to repress his/her freedom to speak on the issues. It's just a tactic to sidetrack the issue and irritate one's opponent, and if taken at face value it is pretty ridiculous, but it invariably sucks people in.

20. Right...
Cats can adapt and grow even larger ears to hear perceived slights, and can use these new organs of sensitivity to adopt formerly cat taboo methods to appear "hip" and "with it", especially with jaded DU lounge posters...

Edited on Thu Jun-10-04 12:33 AM by LiviaOlivia
Let me first say, Teddy dear, this is not an actual reply to you but a way I can sneak my post ahead of others.

And yes, it is a pet peeve. I see people "strategically" place their posts this way all the time.

Back to my main bitch.

Us lucky on the West Coast would appreciate you fools in the Eastern and Central time zones to be a little more sensitive to those of us in the Mountain and Western time zones when it comes to posting your excruciating, blow by blow, and ultimately boring descriptions of "The Daily Show, sports, etc. The world does not revolve around the Eastern time zone.

For the love of God, note spoilers, you unfeeling, selfish, self-centered fucktards.

9. Mine's similar
It pisses me off when someone responds to a normative argument (You should (not) do X because Y) with "It's my right to do it."

Just because you have a right to do something doesn't mean that you should do it; just because you have a right not to do something doesn't mean that you shouldn't.

17. Excellent point...I like the old "my rights end where your rights begin"
and to JP up at the top...the humorous thing about that argument is that the person claiming you are trying to get them to be PC is really trying to shut you up via intimidation.

I maintain people have a right to say whatever they want and I have a right to rebut it or call them on the content of what they say...

There is no such construction in in English. It sounds awkward. Just say something like "People who hate others" or "People who make fun of others," etc etc.

Oh, and "my bad" is incorrect. And no one should ever EVER use "party" as a verb.

26. Folks who flame others based on their own preconcieved notions
It's at it's worst when people are discussing candidates. So many people will flame a pol for something they haven't done - - or flame them for not doing something that the pol has actually done.

And a lot of time that's based on labeling pols - - if a pol is supposedly progressive (or liberal or left or whatever you want to call it), they have to have done certain things and never done other things. Ditto with pols labeled centrist and conservative. And the labels often have nothing to do with the pol's actual history and proposals.

I can't begin to express how annoying that is.

28. Conspiracy lunatics
I was literally shocked my first night on DU, certain the conspiracy threads were tongue-in-cheek then discovering anything but. Since college, the people I generally respect the least are the ones who insist on manufacturing a pathetic built-in excuse -- the boss doesn't like people like me so I'll never get the promotion, we lost because the game was fixed, etc.

I understand the residue of Florida 2000, but a segment of DUers relentlessly apply cynicism to every subject or issue, with the hysterical requirement you prove them wrong instead of the other way around. There are at least a dozen regulars who are foaming to blame Diebold or Jeb if Kerry loses, even if it's by double digits. Then we when we win an election in which the late polls suggested otherwise, like Oklahoma gov '02, Wyoming gov '02 or LA gov '03, miraculously not a single peep from that same crew implying we cheated and swiped one from the Republicans.

60. But conspiracies DO exist, are executed at both high and low levels
of government, and DO affect policy. This is not some wacko theory; it's provable. Remember, Watergate was originally a "wacko" conspiracy.

Don't dismiss all conspiracies out of hand just because a few of them are indeed outlandishly stupid. I mean, you don't REAAAALLLY believe the Warren Commission, do you?

People who routinely look and respond only to certain posters while less-known forum members' often very good threads are ignored and quickly kicked off the front pages.

Also seeing the names of people with 1000+ posts who obviously get a lot out of this forum but have no donor stars which means they don't support it financially. You play -- you pay (what you can) is my belief. I was a donor before I even joined DU.

47. People Asking for Links To Counter An Opinion
I've seen it here a little too often. When someone posits information as fact, without backing it up, i can see it.

But, when a poster reaches a different conclusion from the widely available information, that differs with someone acting stridently, that day, they resort of a request for links to support the opinion.

Exactly where would 99.9% of us find a link to support, reinforce, or validate our own opinions. It's an opinion!

48. I've seen what you describe but...
...I've also seen something else. Actually, this isn't unique to DU, it goes on on all message boards. It is when someone simply posts a smart alecky or nasty response to someone and then try to defend it as an opinion. That is a pet peeve I encounter on ALL message boards. People need to distinguish between expressing an opinion and merely taking a pot shot. Not everything that pops into someone's head and works its way to their fingers and onto the keyboard is an opinion.

63. I have a new one. It started on Saturday. Read:
Here's my new DU pet peeve:

Many DUers are up in arms about the use of the plane used as AF1 to transport Reagan's body, about the closing of the federal government on Friday, about all the taxpayer resources going into this funeral. And I, a DC-area DUer, am very upset about the traffic snafus to come this afternoon.

But this is all standard operating procedure for a state funeral. If Carter or Clinton has a state funeral, it will all be exactly the same. This wasn't done for Nixon because he didn't have a state funeral. It isn't being done because it's Reagan. It's not being done because the Republicans are in power.

It is a state funeral. This is what the U.S. does.

In fact, I think I'll begin a useless lounge thread on the topic just to lure DUers in and regale them with my superior grasp of the subject--I won't even read their posts, but I will reply with a glut of self-validating data. Hell, I'll even steal some from Google and pass it off as my own mystical encyclopedia-like power.

71. People who tell us what to think
Someone launches a valid criticism of a Democrat, along the lines of "I wish he'd stop doing that and run on his record," or whatever (there have been many posts like this about Kerry, and I agreed with well over half of them), and someone else will post a thread saying "I'm tired of all the criticism of so-and-so, we need to stick together."

Saying that our guy is perfect and everything he's doing is great is not "sticking together," it's stupid. I'd rather take the chance that a campaign manager reads posts here and says "hmmm, this poster has a point."

Or, there's the threads about "we need to be civil to Reagan." No, actually, we don't.

Obviously no one here is as bad as a Freeper (except for Freeper lurkers), but I can't stand it when anyone tells me how to feel, whether it's one of us or one of them.

123. Paranoid posts (tinfoilers), doom and gloomers, nostradamus wannabes
All those are annoying.

Paranoids are those that see everything as a conspiracy, and if you don't agree then according to them you are a sheep or naive no matter how nonsensical or absurd their pet theory is.

Doom and gloomers are those that like to post threads that just bum you out, they always take the most negative point of view or most cynical and play it up, another name for them are chicken littles. There are plenty of these too here at DU (too many).

Nostradamus wannabes are related to doom and gloomers, but this time they "see" future disaster, or have a "feeling" something cataclysmic or terrible is gonna happen, these posts usually take everyday trivial events and try to wind them togethr in some sort of narrative as "proof" that this time their sixth sense feelings must be right.
