A fine bassoon player has passed away...
We weren't close, but I played a lot of gigs with him. He was a wonderful musician...among the finest in the DC area; and will be sorely missed.

Rest in peace, Jim Bolyard.

1. Perhaps you will enjoy the following...
"The bassoon is one of my favorite instruments. It has the medieval aroma, like the days when everything used to sound like that. Some people crave baseball . . . I find this unfathomable, but I can easily understand why a person could get excited about playing the bassoon."

Frank Zappa

2. i played the bassoon in middle school
and it was what turned me onto to Zappa. He actually had a bassoon (maybe even a contra bassoon) in Uncle Meat. Mr. Green Jeans.

5. Nice quote!
There was a baroque composer named Francesco Zappa. I've often wondered whether Frank was a descendant, or just took the name, like Engelbert Humperdinck.

4. How sad...
It's obvious he loved his instrument and went to great lengths to learn everything he could about it and perform every possible way with it.

I played violin and bassoon in high school and enjoyed it, but I can't imagine going as far as he did with it. It is a challenging instrument!

6. He made it sound simple...
And ego never was a part of the picture. It was all about the music.

7. sorry to hear this...
in spite of my glib goings on here I truly appreciate music and art of the highest caliber, the basoon is a beautiful instrument to hear, and it is rare to hear nowadays, your friend sounded like he was a master, and to die so young is a loss for everyone.

9. Though his death is a loss...
His life and his music were such a gift! The world is better for having had him here.
