question about a tool song...
Edited on Thu Jun-10-04 05:14 PM by LastKnight
im a tool fan, and maybe im just dense... but... what is the song 'fourty-six and two' in reference to? maynard says multiple times in the song 'fourty-six and two just ahead of me' and... im confused.

on edit- lyrics:

My shadow's Shedding skin and I've been picking scabs again. I'm down digging through my old muscles looking for a clue. I've been crawling on my belly clearing out what could've been. I've been wallowing in my own confused and insecure delusions for a piece to cross me over or a word to guide me in. I wanna feel the changes coming down. I wanna know what I've been hiding in my shadow. Change is coming through my shadow. My shadow's shedding skin I've been picking my scabs again. I've been crawling on my belly clearing out what could've been I've been wallowing in my own chaotic and insecure delusions. I wanna feel the change consume me, feel the outside turning in. I wanna feel the metamorphosis and cleansing I've endured within my shadow. Change is coming. Now is my time. Listen to my muscle memory. Contemplate what I've been clinging to. Forty-six and two ahead of me. I choose to live and to grow, take and give and to move, learn and love and to cry, kill and die and to be paranoid and to lie, hate and fear and to do what it takes to move through. I choose to live and to lie, kill and give and to die, learn and love and to do what it takes to step through. See my shadow changing, stretching up and over me soften this old armor. hoping I can clear the way by stepping through my shadow, coming out the other side. Step into the shadow. Forty six and two are just ahead of me.

2. Found this explanation.
"In tool's1994 newsletter "Nothing in This Books is True, but It's Exactly How Things Are" by Bob Frissell explains that humans are entering their 3rd level of consciousness. This level increase their chromosome count by 2, so we will then have 46 and 2 (instead of 44 and 2 like we do now). This level of consciousness is known as the "Christ Consciousness"."

14. Also,
and he probably wasn't thinking of this when he wrote the song, but I believe Bonobo Chimps have 46 & 2. :)

4. Google Carl Jung...

It's basically a song about shedding your ego and evolving.

"The very clearest and most articulate discussion of this subject is contained in Johnson’s book Owning Your Own Shadow. The Shadow is not a difficult concept. It is merely the “dark side” of the psyche. It’s everything that doesn’t fit into the Persona. The word “persona” comes from the theater. In the Roman theater, characters would put on a mask that represented who the character was in the drama. The word “persona” literally means “mask.” Johnson says that the persona is how we would like to be seen by the world, a kind of psychological clothing that “mediates between our true elves and our environment” in much the same way that clothing gives an image. The Shadow is what doesn’t fit into this Persona. These “refused and unacceptable” characteristics don’t go away; they are stuffed or repressed and can, if unattended to, begin to take on a life of their own. One Jungian likens the process to that of filling a bag. We learn at a very young age that there are certain ways of thinking, being and relating that are not acceptable in our culture, and so we stuff them into the shadow bag. In our Western culture, particularly in the United States, thoughts about sex are among the most prevalent that are unacceptable and so sex gets stuffed into the bag. The shadow side of sexuality is quite evident in our culture in the form of pornography, prostitution, and topless bars. Psychic energy that is not dealt with in a healthy way takes a dark or shadow form and begins to take on a life of its own. As children our bag is fairly small, but as we get older, it becomes larger and more difficult to drag."

5. Tool are Jungians!!??
Edited on Thu Jun-10-04 05:30 PM by tigereye
I find that incredible. We once played at a festival that they headlined ( not my kind of music) years ago before they became famous and I would have been shocked to hear that they even knew who Jung was. Don't know that Jung espoused chromosomal changes though. :)

7. Maynard is at least....he writes the lyrics...

He's also a huge Bill Hicks fan...they sort of have lots of roads they travel down...I wouldn't call him a Jungian though...

9. The album title Aenema indicates this
As it is a Jungian term to describe the traits characteristic of the gender you're not which you're conditioned to repress, yet follow you around like a shadow, subconsiously influencing your perceptions and behavior.

And why would you be surprised that they even know who Jung is? Those guys seem pretty damn smart (you'd have to be to write the music they do). They're not Linkin' Park, after all.
