My grandfather died Thursday night

I am leaving for the funeral today. His death was unexpected to me although he had been in the hospital with heart problems for a week. He was 71 and my first grandparent to die. He and my grandmother had celebrated their 50th anniversary this past fall and served as a good example for a successful marriage and family life. He and my other grandparents had a big part in my childhood and served as good role models at a time when my parents did not. As I have gotten older, I came to accept that I wouldn't have my grandparents forever, but it hurts to lose him anyway. I live a significant distance away from them and don't get to see them often. I did get over there for Easter and I am glad of that. We say good bye and fully expect to see each other again, but such is life.

I know how dear grandparents can be. Mine are all gone now (I'm over 50), but I spent wonderful times with them, especially my maternal grandfather whom I adore and miss to this day.

My grandpa died on April 29, so I have an idea of what it's like, though I obviously don't know what it's like exactly for you.
