I just watched Oscar De La Hoya get his butt kicked
Edited on Sat Jun-12-04 10:51 PM by sgr2
For 12 rounds De La Hoya got knocked around the ring by this young undefeated German fighter named Sturm. All of the HBO announcers said Sturm won the fight. Of course, all 3 Las Vegas judges gave the fight to De La Hoya in a decision.

Totally ridiculous. And boxing wonders why people aren't watching anymore.

1. A sports talk host in Atlanta predicted that would happen

2. If things were not decided
before the fight, it would not be Vegas.

3. Boxing is as booked...
...as WWE!! (Pro Wrestling) (the fights planned ahead, winners determined beforehand, storylines drawn up, etc.)

5. The fight was a week ago (Sorry, 1 week minus two hours on the west coast)

9. I guess...
We have to wait 8 days to report sports news from now on, to give the West Coast'ers a fair shake.

6. Ummmmmm! Oscar's beautiful butt!
I'm sorry, I stopped after reading about his butt - what were you saying?

Did you know that Oscar is sort of a rennaissance man in the classical sense?

Designed his own house and a lot more.

He is not only a great athelete, but a creative and very intelligent man, too.

Gives to charities a lot.

Sorry to hear he didn't fair too well.

7. I hate De La Hoya, I hope Hopkins kills him.
What a ripoff, Sturm beat the balls off of him and got robbed because of the big payday coming up. Boxing is worse than wrestling, at least they are honest about fixing the matches.

8. Sturm won that fight
115-113, or perhaps even 116-112. The scorecards showed that the decision was crap. All 3 judges game DLH the 12th round, when it was very clear Sturm had won that round. Had the 12th gone for Sturm, it would have been a draw. Instead, DLH won and advances to face Hopkins for millions.

10. That's why he won
the fight, because no one is watching boxing anymore. Vegas is banking on the big pay day in September, when Oscar gets his ASS kicked by Bernard!

11. I'm not sure what fight you watched ...
You make it sound totally one-sided. It wasn't. It was close, and possibly Sturm won. But basically all Sturm had was an excellent jab. He threw very few power punches, as HBO's Compubox showed. He threw NO combinations or flurries. His jab was killing De La Hoya, but Oscar didn't lay down. Oscar's body shots were at least as effective as Sturm's jab. I'll bet Sturm's ribs hurt for a few days. And despite the jab, Oscar came back with flurries of punches that scored, even if they didn't put Sturm on the canvas. By the same token, Sturm (the bigger guy) didn't put Oscar on the canvas either. Sturm COULD HAVE followed up some of those jabs with combinations that might've taken Oscar out, but he didn't do so.

I'm not a fan of DLH. I watched this fight specifically because of the initial post in this thread, to see if it was as one-sided as it sounded. It wasn't. So what that HBO announcers thought Sturm won. I seldom agree with Larry Merchant; he's a pompous windbag who seldom has anything to say but tries to say it in grave self-important tones. Was this a close fight? Yes. I think if you're gonna beat DLH, you probably better knock him out. Sturm didn't and couldn't do that.
