Okay.. I need some help. I am playing guitar for a camp this summer
and need some good sing-along-songs to play.
Kids ages 7-16 and staff ages 16-30.

No cheesey kum-by-ya stuff. But good fun songs to sing along with.

What are your suggestions?

1. Joan Baez, Woody Guthrie
tons of folk repertoire. Buy a good songbook.

8. Fine, they don't know it...
... teach it to them--it's enduring. Give them an intro about why it's still valid today, even though it was written in the `30s.

Find the "Tomatoes" song about home-grown tomaters. Follow with "Row by Row." Get some gardeners started.

For 7-16 year-olds, almost anything done by Michael Cooney would do.

If you can play a 12-string, find Pete Seeger's 12-string version of "The Ship."

Malvina Reynolds. Get kind of political. Some Phil Ochs, maybe. Good selections there without being too political.

Camp is supposed to expose them to new things.

So much good music. Fred Neil's "The Dolphins." Etc., etc.

You can't imitate punk or rap, so go for something entirely different. Do a "talkin' blues" and tell `em that was the same as rap seventy years ago.

2. "Am I Evil?" by Metallica
"Am I evil? Yes I fuckin' am!"

It's an all-time sing along classic.

4. Whenever I take my little homemade backpacking guitar on hikes...
I'm always forced to play John Denver's 'Country Roads'. Everybody seems to know that one ... but me.

5. Last Caress by the Misfits
"I got something to say, I killed your baby today. Doesn't matter much to me, as long as it's dead."

6. for the younger ones
Jim Croce had some great sing along tunes and i bet alot of those kids haven't even heard of him, you'd be doing them a favor, also James Taylor as well.
