Can the announcers ever give the Pistons any credit?
All I heard during last night's game is what the Laker's have to do to win the game. The Pistons were pounding them and the announcers said, "Kobe has to do this and Shaq has to do that to win." Drives me nuts.

1. I doubt that the announcers live in Detroit.
But there's a good chance that they live in LA.

Go Pistons!! Eastern Conference Basketball is Supreme.

4. Sure, they might live in LA but shouldn't they be neutral?

They act like the whole country is rooting for LA. When in fact, I'll bet a lot of the country is rooting AGAINST the Lakers.

2. My husband normally doesn't follow basketball but he has watched
every game, hoping for a Pistons win!

He has said the same thing you have said and it just further encourages his hopes for a Lakers loss.

3. "Rasheed was a walking technical foul in Portland"
"yet here he is with the Pistons and one game away from the title".

Ha.....screw the announcers. At least we're not hearing how "heroic" Kobe is for being able to play basketball while others plot his downfall. :eyes:

7. Kobe was definitely the el-bricko Jack Up artist last night
and soon enough he may be cooling himself off in the slammer, and have to console himself with being a jack-off artist.

5. they're probably just covering their own asses
..because they all predicted a sweep or near-sweep for the Lakers. I'm sure the majority of the country wants the Pistons to win--who doesn't love an underdog?

6. Never a mention of sexual assault, either.
The fact that one of the laker "superstars" is at the very least a serial adulterer and very possibly a brutal rapist will prove to be the public relations death knell for pro basketball.

19. I like their style of play, but then again I like defense in any sport
Football, hockey, etc. And, it makes the games go a lot faster. It takes forever to play a 120-118 game.

8. A perfect example:
The Pistons smoked the Lakers in Game One. They were clearly the better team in Game Two, but stumbled near the end. In Game Three, they handed the Lakers the worst playoff drubbing in their history. And in Game Four, cleaned their clocks again.

So, following Game Four, what was the first question the ABC reporter asked Ben Wallace?

"How are you going to slow down Shaq?"

10. It's horrid
They can't deviate from their scripts for one minute, it seems. The sports world (except here in sane Michigan) was expecting this to be such a runaway that they didn't even do any research on the Pistons and now they're paying for it. They have no material at the ready, don't know the history, and barely know the Pistons because they only got something like two or three national games this year (if that many; the only one I remember was against the Pacers when the announcers were clearly rooting for the Pacers).

It really is shameful how they crown champions before the games are even played. I was watching Eastern Michigan University's womens team in the NCAA tournament against Boston College. The media expected Boston College to dominate but at halftime they only had a one point lead. In the first half they said nothing about EMU, its coach, the players, etc. but knew everything about BC practically down to favorite colors and soft drinks. After halftime it was much more balanced; I was picturing the announcers frantically sending assistants to the web to get facts on EMU.

11. you should listen to the radio coverage
I rarely listen to the commentators on TV for that very reason. Turn the TV volume down and the radio up.

The guys doing the radio here are like Chick was.. don't sugar coat stuff.

13. Tell me about it. Yesterday on the pre-game show
Each of the announcers had to come up with a word for Malone, and a word for Bryant. Then they showed an interview with Magic Johnson. They are truly at a loss for words. The local sports announcer here (total jerk anyway) does this "around the horn" show every morning where he gets sportscasters from around the country to come on. He has been rooting for Detroit's downfall from the start (at least he's backed off on his prediction of a Laker sweep) and even so, his show is all about the Lakers!

I watched the game in a pub last night, wearing my Pistons sweatshirt and, get this! After the game was over, a guy came to our table and said, "are you really a Pistons fan or are you just a Laker hater?" Okay, I was wearing a Pistons sweatshirt. I had a Detroit Tigers cap sitting on the table (we'd been playing softball) and a canvas bag that said, MICHIGAN.

Right, I just went out and bought all the stuff because I hate the Lakers.

15. no superstars
on the Pistons team is what I heard on the radio this morning!?! haven't the sportscasters seen 'Sheed or Rip PLAY? just goes back to my point that the Pistons are a better basketball TEAM. they're awesome.
more importantly, the East needs to win the title to stop West Coast domination!

16. I live in LA, but my team is _not_ the Lakers
nor is my son, in Minneapolis, a fan either (despite the Lakers originally being from there). Clippers all the way! (Who, you might ask? Well, we have a second NBA team in LA, who need all the fans they can get). But anyway, the LA Times at least isn't in on the adulation. One comment ran "What was Kobe thinking??!!" referring to his not feeding to Shaq, who was obviously hitting. I read a wise commentary at the start of this saying that the TV media favor teams that have big-name stars rather than teams that play like teams because they think that sells more tickets/ draws more tv viewers. Waddya gonna do?
