Goddamn, I just cut my finger off.
Well, not all the way. But it still fucking hurts like a sonofabitch.

Cutting cheese with a steak knife = bad idea.

Actually, to be fair, the finger is pretty much intact -- the nail's gonna fall off, though. :puke:

I find that listening to Dio really helps when I'm in great pain. But that's just me. ;)

8. you should go to the ER and get a tetanus shot
I'm serious. I did the same thing and I had to get one because apparently it can be pretty serious.

It took awhile to heal btw - I cut the end off of mine while hastily chopping up a credit card. I was using a pair of those blue Durasharp scissors that they sell at Ace Hardware. They'll cut anything up; including YOU!

Hope you aren't in a lot of pain. Try a tourniquet if it is bleeding a lot.

9. Unless you have had one recently, that is....
and as long as the finger is attached DO NOT put a tourniquet on it, you will lose the finger for sure that way.

10. Aaaah - I totally did that when i was twelve
I was too embarrassed to tell my mom - so I kept it wrapped in toilet paper for a week. It didn't fall off, but NOW I use a cutting board vs. the old hold-cheese-in-hand-and-slice-hard method.

12. Yes, I am typing okay (if a bit slow)...
...no, I don't need stitches (the flesh isn't actually cut that deep -- oh, but the nail!)

The bleeding has (more or less) stopped now. I shall take a look at it soon to determine whether it'll require medical treatment or not; as I couldn't immediately suss out how deep the cut was (all that blood obscured my view).

Anyway, thanks for the kind wishes. Except for that thing about the tourniquet -- I'm a guitarist, I can't afford to get the middle finger on my left hand amputated.

use plenty of triple antibiotic ointment and keep the entire area bandaged to prevent further damage via usage. If you really do have to play- put duct tape over the aforementioned bandage and ointment. Wrap it tight and try not to play chords.

on edit - the plastic surgeons say to soak it between dressings - soapy warm water, 10-15 minutes.

13. disinfect that puppy....you don't know what microbial creatures...
...are floating around your home, especially the kitchen.
rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, benitadine will work, though few people have the last item in their homes.
danger of infection probably the greatest threat now.

and yeah, some direct pressure should stop the bleeding ... not a tourniquet.

26. I used a steak knife on cheese once.....
Thought to add a bit of cheese to a recipe at the last minute & just grabbed the closest knife. The knife slid off the hard cheese but did quite well on human flesh. Ouch. Lots of blood, serious pain at first. Healed without a problem.

They always tell you to use a good knife. They are right!
