35. Titanic. Now....before you flame me....
Edited on Tue Jun-15-04 03:54 PM by fudge stripe cookays
I was always a Titanic/shipwreck buff in junior high. I wanted to see a version that wasn't so fake and cheesy like the Hollywood versions of the 50s. I wanted more detail. I wanted the Walter Lord experience.

And I got it! No, I can't stand DeCaprio either, but I enjoyed Kate Winslet. It wove a fake story in with the real wreck to tell an entertaining tale. I could have done without that and just watched the ship and the cinematography.

To anyone who's actually read "A Night to Remember", the precise detail was amazing. That was what I wanted. I got it. Schlock notwithstanding.

This coming from someone who dressed as a Titanic victim for Halloween the year it came out.

38. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
I can't, for the life of me, understand why this movie was so critically reviled. Terry Gilliam created a brilliant visual look for the film as well as a great adaptation of the book. This is one of my favorite Johnny Depp performances, physically he was possessed and it was hysterically funny. I didn't really get Benicio Del Toro's performance at first, but upon repeat viewing I think his might be the best performance in the film. It's just wonderfully impulsive and instinctually in the moment.

But I think more people are coming around to it. And I'm glad Criterion came out with the DVD special edition, though Criterion has put some clunkers in their catalog, maybe they will help give people the opportunity to give this excellent film a second chance.

40. Ghost Ship
I saw it the first time in theaters. We went out with another couple and had planned dinner before the movie. Unfortunately there was a long wait at the restaurant so we got to the movie late. We had just missed the opening scene. When the little girl shows us what happened that night, I was seeing it for the first time, unlike people who not missed the opening scene. That made it much better as far building suspense and emotion. They like to make movies with dramatic opening scenes though. I saw it on video later watching the openingscene and did think that it gave everything away.

As I was going in a bunch of frumpy middle-aged soccer-moms were coming out and asking for their money back. 75. Messenger, The Postman, and Big Trouble in Little China. I loved
Mars Attacks, too, but I never heard anyone say bad things about it.

Oh yeah, and Brother Bear.

78. Vanilla Sky
And I don't even like Tom Cruise, Penelope Cruz, or Cameron Diaz.

I do, however, love every one of Cameron Crowe's movies, and this one was no exception. Jason Lee's being in it helped, too, cause I also adore him.

Overall, I thought it was a very intriguing, well done film. The clerk at the video store actually pleaded with me not to rent it, cause "it is one of the worst movies of all time!!!" apparently. That only made me want to see it more when she said that, and it turned out I was pleasantly surprised, so go figure.

80. Lost Highway
Most people's reactions: "I'm totally confused, it makes no sense, what the hell is happening? THIS SUCKS!"

My reaction: "I'm totally confused, it makes no sense, what the hell is happening? THIS ROCKS!"

81. What Dreams May Come...
I love this movie. I sobbed, I was enthralled. When he stands at his son's funeral and talks about the man his son was never going to become...I get chills just thinking of it.

90. The Omen
I really didn't think it was as bad as the critics said. Truth be told, I also didn't mind "Damien: Omen II" and "The Final Conflict."

91. "Eyes Wide Shut"
I don't think most people realized how Kubrick was playing with them in that movie...

There really WAS no conspiracy....like the doctor kept telling Cruise.

Anyway, I thought it was a great movie with a helluva moral to it.

94. The Right Stuff.
Most people said it was too long. I love it, because there was sooooo much suttle humor.

"Gus...an astronaut named Gus?

No one calls me by that other name."
