DU Concertinists, I need your help.

I'm sure that of the 45000 or so DU'ers, there must be tens if not hundreds of concertinists. :+

Mrs. XNASA received a concertina for her birthday yesterday, and since I'm the resident authority on all things musical and all activities that require the twiddling of one's fingers about, it's now up to me to 'teach' Mrs. XNASA how to play. Or at least give her a few rudimentary instructions.

So, does anyone know how to play one of those things? Doesn't look too hard. :silly:

1. not sure on concertinas but play an accordion

there is a button with an indentation that is C (secon row center on an accordion) the buttons go up and down in fifths along that row. (second row up from C = G, D, A etc down = F, Bflat, Eflat, A flat etc)
the top row alternates in thirds from the button below so up from C is E etc.

the third row of buttons is the major chord of the button above in the second row.

the fourth row of buttons is the minor chord of the button above in the second row.

the fifth row of buttons is the 7th chord of the button above in the second row.

the last row of buttons is the diminished 7th chord of the button above in the second row.

from there it is pretty simple. :)

3. Oh, I took 3 years of accordian lessons ........

I grew up in a Polish-Catholic neighborhood in Chicago. It was required that everyone play accordian at the time. ;-)

Still got one in the basement, but the reeds are all screwed up.

But this is a different beast. The notes change depending on which direction the bellows move. Think of it as a Harmonica with bellows.

5. Concertina Self-Taught

It can't be all that difficult to learn the concertina on your own. The first thing to learn is how to play a scale. When you can do that, you can play a tune. I recommend "Happy Birthday".
