Does anyone else find begging for money tacky?
In any form.. pledge drives, panhandling, etc...

I'm just curious because it seems like there is a lot of it going on everywhere.

1. No!
I find it incredibly sad that it is necessary.

For example, when PBS has a pledge drive, they generally program really great stuff. The interruptions drive me crazy. However, I realize their government funding has been reduced by so much, what else can they do?

Re panhandling: I see it as so demeaning to the person that I can't judge it as "tacky". I see it as resulting from the "end of welfare as we know it", from the closing of so many in-patient mental health facilities, from being laid off and going down a slippery slope, even from addiction. To me, it is so sad and another piece of evidence that our country has taken a disgusting right turn!

So, although I might be irritated by some 'begging for money', I would never label it as 'tacky'. So I'm a bleeding heart, so sue me!

:hi: :kick:

4. I understand...
And don't get me wrong, I do a decent amount of donating - but usually to those who don't ask.

It's almost more enjoyable to do that rather than to bow to marketing. I never donate to anyone who has sent me junk mail, for instance.

Only twelve more donations before midnight and I win a
T-shirt...which I will give to someone on DU who wants it, (I don't wear T-shirts.)

I always donate.

2. Yes, I find it incredibly tacky
Just charge for a service and be done with it.

Constant 'pledge breaks' are just annoying

6. When done in Bell Air or Beverly Hills by people with jobs, yes.
Especially the celebrities.

If I see that goddamn Cher on Rodeo Drive, pushing a shopping cart filled with recyclable bottles and asking me for quarters one more time, I swear....

I think General discussion was the appropriate place for this discussion, considering the fund drive and all the donations.

I wonder what their reasons are???

When they put you over here...this is where elephants go to die.

8. yes, i find it tacky

It destroys friendships when people beg from family and friends, and it is just a nuisance when it comes from strangers. With my income in the mid four figures, I do not beg or panhandle, and I resent people who earn several times what I do hitting me up for money, which seems to happen on a daily basis!

On Edit: I do not think it is tacky for a web site such as DU to solicit donations as long as they do not use "pop-ups." I mis-read the question and thought the original poster was referring to people in real life getting in your face and asking for money. I must have one of these faces because even though I am one of the lowest income people I know, I get hit up in real life all the time -- so I guess it has become a sensitive issue for me.

But I see no harm in web sites having tip jars.

14. I take the L home from class and each night I pass the same 7 or 8 men

I feel so sorry for the kids and now you see so many kids on the streets with their parents.

I have a large heart for people but some don't want help they want cash only.

One man has his kids with him now and they are asking for cash.

I give to one man because I don't have allot of money and I hand out food to him and the others. Some of them don't want food and I am starting to get sick of them hitting me up because if they were hungry they would take the food. The one guy that I give the cash to is a Vet and he appreciates everything you give him. The vet without legs is missing and I hope he is alright.

We have tons of fake people begging in Chicago an it ruins it for the people that really need help.
