Are DUers more pet-centric than the population at-large?

I noticed that a lot of DUers are really, really into their pets. I think that's cool.

I don't have any pets now, but I grew up with dogs and cats, and I lived with a great golden retriever from 1999-2003....until my ex and I broke up....

But do you think that DUers are more into pets than your average American?

1. They certainly are more cat-centric

Which is fine with me, I'm a cat person. But I do think they prefer cats more than the population at large.
Interesting, isn't it? When I picture cats I picture independence; for dogs I picture neediness. Dogs are known for bouncing off the walls when you come home, and begging attention. at least all the dogs I have ever seen are like that, unless they were trained to attack...So, why would Republicans like dogs more (and I think this is also a trend), which to their mind must remind them of welfare recipients?

7. Republicans consider obedience a virtue

and independence a form of insubordination. Hence why they like dogs, for their trained servile obedience, just as "lower class" humans ought to be.

Of course, I really like dogs. To me they are friendly and appreciative and very smart. Dogs will try to protect their pack, and even put themselves in danger to do so. I think that dogs are natural Democrats.

Wasn't there a suggestion floated not long ago that there should be a sub-forum in the Lounge just for pet threads? That might actually get my wife into politics. She is like a damn broken record going on incessantly about our three cats! Of course, I do the same thing quite often... and come to think of it she'd probably kick my fat ass from here to Zimbabwe if she knew what I just said. 4. I don't know, it's an interesting question...

Perhaps liberals by their very definition are more accepting of all creatures and much more willing to acknowledge the importance of animals (and plants, and insects, and minerals, and ...) to Earth, therefore Duers are more likely to love animals in general and their pets in particular.

But I've met more than one conservative who has just wept uncontrollably at the loss of his/her dog/cat/companion animal.

5. Nah. The whole country loves its pets.

Not just here. We're a country full of cat and dog lovers. It's one of our redeeming qualities. I'm the only DU'er I know in real life, but almost everybody I know is crazy about their pet(s).

Are Europeans as in love with their pets? Other cultures?

I wonder how much money is spent on pet medical care each year here in the US? Probably enough to feed a small country....

8. People who spend lots of time in front of their computer

rather than interacting with other humans in person. Yeah, I'd say that's a group that's more likely to be close to their pets. I don't mean that in a critical way, but I think it makes sense.
