5. There was a thread a couple days ago that asked what former Presidents

were doing with their time since leaving office. Reagan of course gets a "free pass" since he was battling a terrible disease, however, if Nancy Reagan is true to form, she will soon be out fighting for stem cell research.

Bush I- nothing useful (Carylye group, tandem jumping out of airplanes? Whoop-de-doo)
Clinton-The Clinton Foundation which seeks to help those with Aid's in African and assist struggling economy's world wide.
Carter-Habitat for Humanity and traveling globally to oversee elections.
I don't know about Nixon but as I recall, he didn't do shit after he left office in shame.

Democrats have this deep desire to help, even when they are out of the public eye. It *is* personal and political.

Poopy--I mean Poppy: Piling up money through dubious associations with the likes of the Carlyle Group.

Reagan (free pass, hell): Piling up money from inflated speaker's fees. He got $2.5 mil for two speeches he gave in Japan within a few weeks of leaving the White House.

Nixon: Least vile of the lot, believe it or not. Made a few bucks from his self-exculpatory autobiography but spent most of his time in embittered isolation.

But it is hard for me to totally criticize the man for his post Presidential involvement in the world. Give the guy a break, he was pooping himself, doing puzzles for 3 year olds and couldn't recognize his family. He really wasn't given the option to get involved or not. Given the option, chances are he would have done what Ford and Poopy are doing but since he wasn't given the option due to a terrible illness, I am going to let him off the hook.

Look, I understand that a lot of people aren't willing to give Reagan a pass just because of his recent demise, but are willing to give him a pass because he had a terrible disease that has touched many innocent lives. Well, his was NOT one of the innocent lives! There is NOTHING about the man that was innocent! He was a chickenhawk, warmongering, posturing fucker who deserved MUCH worse than what he got. I wish hee could have lived to 100, so he could keep shitting on himself like he shit on America for so long. Kissinger and Arafat are good examples of that type of shortsightedness. As is Begin and many others.

In Carter's case he was awarded the prize for decades of humanitarian service. Some, usually right wingers, will denigrate it by saying that it was a slap at Bush. Nevertheless his work did merit this type of award and I praise him for it.

I'm not all that big a fan of awards myself but I was happy to see that one.
