First some links to articles for the basic background:

http://www.globalresearch.ca/articles/COA404A.htmlAnyways, I'm thinking of writing a novel about the coup that almost happened, an alternate history of what would have happened if the coup succeeded. I figure the Point of Divergence would be that the plotters never bothered going to Smedley Butler to lead the American Legion in 1933, therefore the plot wasn't exposed at all until it was attempted.
Anyways, this is the basic rundown of what I was thinking, as far as the beginning set up if you will, not even in outline format yet but I do have a basic synopsis. In August, 1934, haven't decided on the exact day, need more research. Silver shirts and the American legion march side by side into Washington D.C. to march against the "Red Deal" of Roosevelt's. At over 500,000 they march into the city demanding his resignation immediately, unknown to most of the populace, Roosevelt is sent an ultimatum by the Du Pont and Morgan Empires, to appoint a new Executive officer to deal with the affairs of state, and for the President to relinquish power to him. Roosevelt refuses, and within days suffered an accident in the White House that lead to his death. A National day of mourning is instituted plus full state funeral for the fallen president. Soon after the accident, John Nance Garner is sworn in as President of the United States. The American Liberty League found him to be MUCH more pliable to their wishes and quickly works with Congress to roll back Roosevelt's New Deal Programs.
Due to the rolling back of the New Deal and lost faith in the federal government's help in the econmy, Californian voters make a surprise move and vote in Democratic Party nominee and former Socialist Party member, Upton Sinclair as the Governor. The American Liberty League, seeing this as a sign that they could not appeal to common citizen's concerns about the federal government to gain power strike a deal with Charles Lindbergh, Al Smith(former governor of New York) and various other pro-fascist members of both parties, to flee them and form a new party, the America First Party (Lindbergh named it). Using Hearst Papers as a springboard, they go on a propoganda blitz against both the Republican and Especially the Democratic parties, as well as Upton Sinclair himself as secret communist organizations that are going to undermine the "American Way of Life". With desparation setting in, recruitment into this party steadily increases throughout the 1934 and dramatically increases in 1935.
So what do you guys think so far, I was thinking that this could culminate into a civil war between the states, however I have been looking high and low for information on the politics of the time (1934-35) in the various states, but I strike out. I figured that the Executive overreaches, and pisses off certain states in the process, and soon enough they decide to use violence to keep power. Which states are most likely to seceed and what other ideas for this do you guys have?
