Any Audiophiles here?
Last week was a sad one... Mr. B's 18 year old Denon amp died. He was broken hearted.

So he is now trying to fix it but I think it may be hopeless.
The sad fact is that we bought him a little Bose system that might work with our TV but its speakers can't compare with his 18 year old Klipsch speakers...so it was returned....

He would like to get a new receiver but he is trying to be economical but I feel kinda bad because he never spends any cash on himself and while I understand his hesitation because he just started his new job a few months ago but I think he should get something he likes and something that will last...but perhaps I am a novice.

I will say that I did notice the difference between the new Bose speakers and his old Klipsch ones...the K's have a much "richer" tone...

1. Get him an Adcom
http://www.adcom.com/

You can build a Class A system from there.

2. I wouldn't even dare to help him...
while I work with loads of technology every day stereo equipment is not my speciality and I leave it up to him.

5. Show him the link, he'll find a dealer and can check them out

I have a few Adcom systems, including in my recording studio, and I can attest to their value and super sound (when warmed up). I replaced some vintage Dynaco & JBL systems with Adcoms, and I'm plenty happy.

on edit: Adcom components aren't cheap, but after ten years they'll still be crankin and worth a lot more on the used market. Consider Adcom gear to be an investment.

3. Definitive for the speakers...
definitive.com
These are some of the highest rated speakers out there for the price. As far as amps or recievers go Denon is a great brand. Try crutchfield.com to compare the differet models and they also have good explanations of what to look for and what all the lingo means. Don't know your price range but this is a GREAT reciever ...http://www.crutchfield.com/S-NNeW89ngLFT/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?s=0&c=4&g=10420&I=033AV2805B&o=p&a=0&cc=01&avf=N&search=

BTW stay away from Bose they are over priced for the quality. Not saying they are bad so much as not as good as the cost.
"No highs no lows must be Bose!"

8. Crutchfield is overpriced; look around first, before you buy there.

6. If he likes Klipsch, he'd probably like Polk
...although it sounds like the speakers are fine, it's just the old Denon that's finished. Solution: a new Denon! They have an "affordable" line that's still built incredibly well. :)

9. The new Denon isn't the same as an 18 year old one. It's now a Sony
Edited on Mon Jun-21-04 09:51 PM by Billy Burnett
Denon is now a subsid of Marantz, which is owned by Sony. :-(

It's not your grandfather's Denon anymore. :-(

7. Bose is crap. All marketing, no substance.
What price range are you talking about?
Are you looking for a surround sound system for movies, or just a stereo?

10. No such thing as "Audiophile" surround sound
Though it did make me chuckle. :-)

13. You're probably right, there.
Does make the movies more interesting, though.

I should have said to only use the crutchfield for comparing. I have found the local stereo shops(not Best But or Circuit City) are quite willing to deal if you have done the internet research and know what is what. Also you will always have someone to call or go see if you need help after the sale. For the most part the owner is working the counter and will really know his/her stuff.

12. Own my own sound reinforcement company!
Well, I am it's VP, my husband the President.

Get a Crown amp--better than Denon.

14. Crown is great for sound reinforcement, but its not "audiophile"
Classic Crown DC 300'a are the "golden standard" for mid size studio monitor systems (for tracking), but true class "a" nearfield monitoring is used for critical mixing.

The big Crowns are great for outdoor gigs, stadia, and bass rigs - they're not really meant to drive 18 year old Klipsch speakers.
