Most annoying sports personality ever
Right now, I'm really mad that Larry Brown left Philly to win with the Pistons - he's 63 and had a few more years left to build on the nucleus - but my choice could change later.

2. At 27, you're a little young to remember
Howard Cosell. His voice was like fingernails on a chalkboard, his analogies-offbase and wordy, his arrogance-unequalled and totally unjustified.

Howard Cosell's retirement was the best thing to happen to professional sports in the 20th century.

Diminutive in stature. Yet an athletic prowess about him never seen. If one tried. One would have. To say. Greatness.

The dude was annoying on his sports broadcasts, but he did do a hell of a lot for african-american athletes. He had a knack for interviewing people, and leaving them room to answer difficult questions, comfortably.

12. I think he was more pretentious than arrogant

Still, he wasnt just another pretty face and he had things to say that the typical ex-jock or professional sports announcer wouldnt.

But, OTOH, there was that toupee ...

35. But when he was at his best, he asked questions and took stands
that NO other sports figure -- on the field or in the press box -- would ask or take. He was one of the FEW sports journalists who stood up for Muhammad Ali when Ali refused to go to Vietnam. People forget that.

4. Most annoying? John Rocker. Or maybe Ty Cobb.
Of course, I consider "annoying" to be something which is a product of inherent personal characteristics, not of, say, going somewhere else to make more money, which is perfectly understandable.

He just isn't very good anymore. Alan Ashby, perhaps? He's Milo's color man, who does play by play for a few innings a game.

14. I can't stand even one second of Jim Rome, an overrated mediocrity
Rome is the sporting version of George W. Bush. I click the channel immediately when their voices or images are imminent.

I know plenty of DUers disagree, based on previous polls. They say Rome's politics are decent, down the middle.

I never allow him to get that far. If someone is obnoxious and loud, I expect and demand accompanying brilliance, or at least unique opinions. Jim Rome spouts the most cliche and unoriginal sporting theories of all time, yet in a voice and tone like he's the only one who knows this stuff. I am absolutely flabbergasted he has any following at all. Sports Analysis for Simpletons, 101.

Last year's debut of Rome's ESPN show was perfect evidence, classic Rome: In a preview commercial be unleashed the all time blase opinion that the NFL draft is a crap shoot, then as evidence shouted that Joe Montana was a 4th rounder. Disregard that Montana was actually selected in the 3rd round by San Francisco in '79.

His other preview commercials unleashed these Rome-alone brainstorms:

* Barry Bonds is doing great things in baseball, especially for his age

* It's wrong for little league baseball parents to go overboard during the games

Gee, I really should check out Jim Rome's show this week. Maybe I'll learn the Lakers will be a different team next year, or Phil Mickelson probably won't win the Grand Slam.

Possibly the greatest second baseman ever (the only real competition for that title coming from Rogers Hornsby, who played 20 years before the integration of the sport). And more importantly, he was such a smart player. Never tried to steal when he couldn't make it. Never swung at a bad pitch. Always in position defensively.

But damn, is that guy a moron when he's on TV....

edited to change the HTML brackets, 'cause DU's dumb that way. ;)

Great assessment.

I can't watch more than a few innings in an Angel game on ESPN because of that guy. Back home, I could just tune in the radio & watch the TV w/ the sound off. Sigh.
