I watched the most amazing documentary on HBO: Heir to the Execution

It's the story about Ethel & Julius Rosenberg as told by their granddaughter Ivy Meeropol. I've always known the basic facts about the Rosenbergs: That they were involved in the communist party in America, that Roy Cohn trumped up the charges on them and that they were probably executed wrongly. But I never really bothered to learn much past what you get in High School American History classes.

This was a great story where Ivy interviewed her father (Rosenberg's oldest child) and friends of the Rosenbergs, many whose lives were spared because the Rosenbergs refused to impliment anyone else. They even covered the release of the Verona documents which showed that Julius was sharing secrets with the communists, but nothing to do with the bomb nor any proof that Ethel was involved.

It was a very moving subject where Ivy tried to contact other family members including some Aunts/Uncle to ask why they wouldn't take in the Rosenberg's children (the 2 boys were adopted by the Meeropol family) and a journey to where her Uncle David Greenglass (Ethel's brother) lived. They wouldn't visit him because it was his testamony that pretty much damned the Rosenbergs to death.

It's a great documentary and by the end of it I was crying my eyes out. This whole family was put through hell because of a Communist Witch hun by McCarthy & Cohn. I never realized they had children and now grandchildren out there. If you get a chance - watch the documentary!!

2. Let's put it this way, the Rosenberg heirs aren't too keen on him

Robert Rosenberg (the oldest son) was pretty blunt about his opinion on David Greenglass. Ivy wanted to drive by his home (which btw, Greenglass lives under an assumed name and she somehow found his address) just to see where he lived.

8. I think it's that important of a documentary to watch

I'm not sure which part affected me more:

The fact that our govenment trumped up their charges in order to pretty much scare other communists in the country

The fact that these 2 kids were orphaned by our government

or the fact that Ethel loved her husband so much that she would do absolutely nothing to save herself. They executed Julius first and when they took Ethel to the chair they gave her once last chance to save herself and she refused so she could be with her husband. That is freaking love!!!

I think their story is also poignant because it could happen again. If fact it might be happing right now in guantanamo bay.
