Lollapalooza tour cancelled due to poor ticket sales
or "it's the economy stupid"

Lollapalooza Canceled Due to Poor Sales

1 hour, 3 minutes ago

LOS ANGELES - The Lollapalooza music festival tour was canceled Tuesday, just three weeks before it was supposed to start.

Tour organizer Perry Farrell (news) blamed poor ticket sales and said his "heart is broken" from scrapping the tour, according to a statement on the on the tour's official Web site...

..."I'm in utter disbelief that a concert of this stature, with the most exciting lineup I've seen in years did not galvanize ticket sales," tour co-founder Marc Geiger said on www.lollapalooza.com.

24. Yeah I know :(
I've never been able to see The Lips live, and it definitely would've rocked.

Oh well :(

3. Best News I've Had All Day.
I really want to see Morrissey. The new disc is wonderful. But I didn't want to see him at some hipfest that jumped the shark years ago. And I certainly don't want to see him outdoors in an arena rock setting.

Now maybe he'll play someplace cozy like the Park West. Even the Aragon is better than the Tweeter Center.

11. I wholehartedly agree with you
Hubby and I *LOVE* Morrissey. We're in Seattle, which is where the tour was going to kick off.

However, as much as we love Morrissey, I loathed the idea of having to stand around a huge ampitheater for hours and hours and hours just to catch a far-away glimpse of him singing.

I guess the ticket prices weren't TOO bad----but parking was $25 a car, which is just un-fucking-acceptable.

WE had waffled as to whether or not to buy tickets as soon as they came out, and luckily we didn't. We figured SOMETHING would happen, and since lately Morrissey hadn't been showing up for scheduled appearances (Craig Kilborn, Pepsi Smash, etc), we thought it prudent to wait til closer to the show before we bought tickets, that is if we decided to buy tickets at all.

Morrissey and summer-festivals do not mix. I went to Lollapalooza in 97, I believe, and it was an okay show, but like other posters said---after about 7 hours of music, I just start to zone out and want to leave. Plus, after about 7 hours of music, drinking, pot, etc, the crowd starts getting a bit wound up and violent (in my experience) and that's not my scene at all.

13. Can you imagine trying to enjoy a song like "Irish Blood English Heart"...
...with some 18 year-old drunk goth kid sitting next to you?

I have nothing against 18 year-old goths but I rather keep my distance, thank you very much.

I wonder if anyone else digs the new Moz disc here at DU?

But not as much as Viva Hate. It has been his most consistent and well produced in a while, though.

19. Well I've listened to it
and let me preface by saying that my husband and I both collectively love Moz/Smiths more than the total love that the earth has ever known, multiplied by 10^100 :)

That out of the way----I've heard his new album....but I find with this album, I'm having to make an effort to pay attention to the songs, and I'm having to find things to like about the songs. Sadly, I've not 'liked' this album immediately as I have with 99% of other Moz/Smiths albums (ah! showing my age! what the fuk is an ALBUM? ha ha)

But I'm not cutting it loose just yet. It's a bit different than his others, that's for sure. It'll just take me a while to get used to it. Also may have to do with the fact that while awaiting the release of this album, we've been playing NOTHING but Morrissey/Smiths for the last few months.

Who am I kidding---all we LISTEN to is Morrissey/Smiths

He might've gotten some sunlight on him.

17. I've heard that he now spends most of his time in LA.
Maybe he's not so shy of the sun anymore. Here's a recent pic of Moz in the park. It's a miracle.

20. Did you see/read the SPIN from a month or so ago
with a huge moz interview & his face on the cover?

He's alot older than he was when he was the boy with a thorn in his side, but he's still a quite handsome man for his age :)

4. Plain and Simple: package tours suck
Edited on Tue Jun-22-04 10:18 AM by Beware the Beast Man
I'd rather throw down money to see an opening act play for 45 minutes to an hour and a headliner play for 90-120 minutes than see 8-20 bands play for 30 minutes apiece. I went to two Lollapaloozas (92 and 94) and was largely disappointed for that reason alone.

5. I went to the Lollapalooza in 92 (or was it 93)
Red Hot Chili Peppers were to be the last (aka best act). The only group that I was impressed with and had a good stage show was Pear Jam... I sadly thought the Red Hot Chili Pepper sucked. Other than those two acts (one memorable, one not really other than it sadly sucked) all I remember was the Jim Crow Freak Show and the irons hanging from the guys eyelids.

8. Ministry stole the show-
Edited on Tue Jun-22-04 10:28 AM by Beware the Beast Man
I saw it at the Star Lake Ampitheater in Burgettstown, PA (outside Pittsburgh) and it was insane. It was a mob scene. The Chili Peppers seemed tired and sluggish. Soundgarden (who I paid to see) were disappointing; they only played for like 30 minutes.

EDIT: I think you mean Jim Rose, not Jim Crow :)

22. You are so right!
I was getting a little bored and as soon as Ministry and then Ice Cube came on, I was right back into it. Chili Peppers sucked.

6. I went to all the Lollapaloozas 93 thru 96
My big problem with Lollapalooza was after 3 to 4 hours i get "music overload." I hate shows that go past 4 hours. I get antsy.

9. That too
Ticket prices are ridiculous. Compound that with the fact that I'm a fan of studio music to begin with, and you'll see how little I go to concerts.

16. Lolla was the weakest of the summer festival tours
if Van's or Ozzfest were to cancel, then I'd start to worry about the whole industry.

It's definitely a sign of the economy though. Kids are having trouble getting part time jobs as they are being taken by out of work professionals. Thanks Shrub.

18. Yeah, but Lollapalooza was more of a mix of quirky bands.
Ozzfest and Warp are more Jock-rock oriented. More teens go for Jock-rock and more teens i think go to concerts.

21. I went to Lollapalooza last year. It was cool
Of course since ticket sales weren't that strong, we bought the tickets earlier in the day. I thought that the price which was around $70 was reasonable for a concert that involved several bands. I believe that this tour wouldn't have gotten anywhere near me so I probably wouldn't have went anyway.

i had front row seats and had been looking forward to it all summer

people will pay to see crap like ozzfest and kiddie poppunk like the vans warped tour but three legends pj harvey, morrisey, and sonic youth, along w/ the most exciting lineup in years can't sell enough tickets to sustain a tour

people have no fuckin' taste

26. That Line Up Sucks
That's My Prediction As To Why It Went Belly-Up. Like It Or Not, Music Festivals Are Big Business - The List Of Artists Are Old Bands (Morrisey, Pixies, Flaming Lips Even) Kids Don't Know Who The Hell These Guys Are - And The "Rock" Potential Is Weak At Best. What Were They Thinking?

27. How much were tickets? I wouldn't blame the economy
I would blame a competitive concert summer, a less than average (IMO) Lollapalooza lineup, and the sheer heat of being in outdoor arenas in the daytime.
