Name an actor/actress who
you think should have won an Academy Award, but never did.

I'll start with Peter O'Toole (for "Lawrence of Arabia.")

2. so, so many..
but the one that still stings is Cate Blanchett not winning for Elizabeth in favor of Gwyneth Paltry.

Also, Alfred Hitchcock never won one.

he lost to Robin Williams for Good Will Hunting and I think that was a great choice.

8. easy, Cary Grant
only two nominations and not even for his best films. He should have been nominated for "The Awful Truth", "Bringing UP Baby", "Gunda Din", "His Girl Friday", "Notorious", and "North by Northwest" and he should have won "The Awful Truth"

Females--Jean Arthur--another talented comedienne--comedies are not well rewarded by the Academy. She was brilliant in "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington", "Easy Living", "The More the Merrier" and should have won for "Shane"

Other notables
Rosalind Russell
Edward G. Robinson
Richard Burton

never won an Oscar!!

AND
in the supporting category--despite four nominations Agnes Moorehead should have won for her role of Fanny Minafer in "The Magnificent Ambersons"

for an episode of "The Wild Wild West" and a Golden Globe for "Hush...Hush Sweet Charlotte". Won the NY film critics award for "Ambersons"

BTW, I'm writing a biography of Agnes which will be released next April--incase any fans are on board.

10. Great choice
As a disclaimer, I'll tell you the Oscars are a serious hobby, so I could go on for hours, but I'll endeavour not to.
Richard Burton, "Who's Afraid Virginia Woolf?"
Ann Savage, "Detour"
Glenn Close "Dangerous Liasons"
John Malkovich, ditto.
Donald Sutherland "Ordinary People"
Cicely Tyson, "Sounder"
Deborah Kerr "From Here to Eternity"
Montgomery Clift, ditto
James Dean, anything he did.
I'll stop now. I've only listed people that never won a competitive Oscar, btw.

25. Cary Grant, Buster Keaton...
And yes, certainly O'Toole, who also should have won for "Becket," a remastered version of which is now being released. Amazingly, Rex Harrison won that year for "My Fair Lady." For that matter, Richard Burton should have won an Oscar, but never did. He was nominated that same year (1964), along with O'Toole, and perhaps they split the vote. Though I would have given it to him for "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" Oh yeah---O'Toole gave an Oscar-worthy performance in "The Stunt Man" in 1980, but it's hard to argue with that year's winner: De Niro in "Raging Bull."

I could also make the case for Bob Hoskins, specifically for "The Long Good Friday."

31. Whoopi Goldberg deserved the Oscar in 1985 for the Color Purple...
Instead, the Academy chose to pay tribute to Geraldine Page's career by giving her Best Actress for The Trip to Bountiful.

Whoopi later did get Best Supporting for Ghost.

32. the year: 1994 the crime:
giving Hanks a second consecutive oscar, this time for the Gumpster.

Any actor worth their salt can tell you that playing the mentally challenged is the easiest type of role to do. Try it yourself, I'll bet you'll be damned convincing.

who should have won that year is:

Morgan Freeman for Shawshank Redemption. He had to carefully balance a role that could have become so sappy if played even a little bit wrong. He nailed it. It was a hard role- quiet, crucial, exactly the kind of part actors are scared to even attempt.

But no. Hanks had to have two.

Morgan Freeman was wonderful in Shawshank Redemption.
Tom Hanks should have received an Oscar for Apollo 13, though I don't recall his competition that year.

I can't believe that a director of his caliber has never won an Oscar. And what I personally consider his best film, "Goodfellas," lost to the interminably long and boring "Dances with Wolves."

39. Denzel Washington for Malcolm X
I'm still not convinced his win for Training Day - a good performance, but not the caliber of his ASTONISHING work in Spike Lee's masterpiece - isn't a makeup for not giving him the golden boy for Malcolm X. He WAS Malcolm, through and through.
