Females--Jean Arthur--another talented comedienne--comedies are not well rewarded by the Academy. She was brilliant in "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington", "Easy Living", "The More the Merrier" and should have won for "Shane"

And yes, certainly O'Toole, who also should have won for "Becket," a remastered version of which is now being released. Amazingly, Rex Harrison won that year for "My Fair Lady." For that matter, Richard Burton should have won an Oscar, but never did. He was nominated that same year (1964), along with O'Toole, and perhaps they split the vote. Though I would have given it to him for "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" Oh yeah---O'Toole gave an Oscar-worthy performance in "The Stunt Man" in 1980, but it's hard to argue with that year's winner: De Niro in "Raging Bull."

I could also make the case for Bob Hoskins, specifically for "The Long Good Friday."

Any actor worth their salt can tell you that playing the mentally challenged is the easiest type of role to do. Try it yourself, I'll bet you'll be damned convincing.

who should have won that year is:

Morgan Freeman for Shawshank Redemption. He had to carefully balance a role that could have become so sappy if played even a little bit wrong. He nailed it. It was a hard role- quiet, crucial, exactly the kind of part actors are scared to even attempt.

But no. Hanks had to have two.
