Got a desktop last year for the bigger screen. I still miss my baby! Looking for a laptop that's reliable and reasonably priced now.

Laptops are pretty much a done deal. I like to be able to change to a newer video card or bigger hard drive or add a new device without having to buy a whole new system.

Plus I can use a pocket pc for my on the go things.

13. My primary computer is an iBook

A few years ago, I would have said desktop, because you couldn't get the same features in a desktop.

I like the small footprint, the fact I can work on the couch or wherever, and that I can travel and not have to take files on disk.

16. After owning every Apple computer ever made

I now love my brand new iBook G4 that my lovey bought me for my birthday. I've also got a desktop G4 that's now unplugged because I'd rather use my iBook and take it everywhere in the house.

As a matter of fact, we're both MacAddicts - sitting together on the couch right now - him with his Powerbook, me with my iBook - perfect for each other!

Of course, we do turn off the computers at some point!!!

22. I have the evolution of the mac in my house:

A non-functional Performa 200 (68K)
A mostly-functional Performa 6400 (PPC)
A sitting idle, but fully functional (and will get plugged in when I set up the room) iMac (G3)
My iBook (G4)

Now I just need a G5 to have one of each model...(I'm a bit of a pack rat...)

14. I have both, and I use the laptop almost exclusively

I have an Airport setup in my apartment, and the coffeehouse down the street is a free Wi-Fi zone, so I use the desktop only when I need to print something out.

When I upgrade, I'm going to get a 15" Powerbook as my main computer and (later) a 12"iBook for backup and travel. (My current laptop is an ancient iBook that weighs a ton.)

15. I prefer desktop, but I'd choose laptop

Just because I travel and need to have access to the world when I'm away from home.

Hard to take a desktop and monitor when travelling.

But I prefer the sstability and lack of breaking and easy-to-replace and upgrade-ability of the desktops, plus the ability to have a much larger monitor.

17. Depends on my uses: (and, yes, I am about to do some name-dropping)

Gaming = desktop (easier to upgrade - only way to upgrade without buying new laptop)

Web design = makes no difference, though I'd hook up an external monitor when at home.

Word processing = ditto.

Surfing = ditto.

Looking at porn = desktop. Somehow it doesn't seem right to look at it in public. O8)

Oh, as two Mac users already felt the need to start name-dropping (can't blame them myself, I'd do the same), go with PCs(1). They cost less, you can replace Winbloat with Linux, and you likely won't care for the extra CPU power as the computer is more than just the CPU. Video, hard drive, and RAM performance mean a lot too. And the Macs do charge a lot for mid-level hardware, and that's for the high end machines. Their low end machines aren't worth half of what they sell them for.

(1) Indeed, if you go for a laptop, get the IBM T41. They're solid machines with great keyboards. It is also the ONLY laptop with technology that senses swift laptop movement and parks/shuts off the hard drive to help prevent possibility of losing the data when the laptop crashes. The technology is also patented so it'll be unique to IBM for a while. :D

19. 12" PowerBook with Airport Extreme

I live in a large studio apartment, and there is just no room for a big honkin' monitor, plus an ugly CPU, and don't even get me started about the cables...

Yes, the screen is somewhat small, but it fits perfectly on the fold-down tray on airplanes, and WiFi is almost everywhere here in Boston.

I spent alot of $$$ on my laptop, but I would never go back to a desktop system, even if I had the room for one.

I love my 15 Pbook. I think we have a desktop around here somewhere, but mostly just apple laptops- 2 ibooks and 2 pbooks.

It' s probably because I have it set up so comfortably--not on a desk where sitting there hour after hour can hurt the back. In this setup (pic below), I have a TV across the room and a radio next to me.

Definitely. I'd rather have a 19" CRT than a 14.1" LCD panel, a 7200 RPM desktop hard drive is MUCH batter than the 5400 RPM drives in laptops, laptop graphics cards usually leave something to be desired...for me, a computer is an all-in-one communication tool, reference tool and home entertainment centre, and a laptop just can't do what a desktop can.

I learned to type on a manual typewriter and can't stand a laptop tiny keyboard. I spend 8- 10 hours a day at my puter. I need a full sized keyboard.

25. I work on my computer, too...

...so I completely understand what you're saying. It's my understanding, though, that laptops have a port where you can plug in a full-sized keyboard. That would be all I'd need. I'd plug in my ergonomic keyboard while working, but have the flexibility of a space-saving laptop and portability -- the best of both worlds!

Of course, I'm still just dreaming. I can't afford a laptop right now and may not be able to for another couple of years. I'm sure that by then, though, they'll be even more powerful and have even better screens.

Back to dreaming... uh, I mean... working. Right. That's it. Working.

26. Laptop for posting Desktop for gaming

Fortunately I don't have to make that descision. Have 2 laptops (both with wireless nics), 2 desktops(though main system is currently down), and several systems in various state of disassembly.
