If there are any Little Johnny Cougar (his original stage name, when Mainman thought he was going to be the next Bowie) fans out there, just don't tell me. I'm starting you out with 3; other tunes will be chosen from among the "You idiot! I can't believe you left out ________"-type replies, or if there aren't enough of those, from whatever occurs to me. I'll add an Other response, too.

But as I read through the other posts, someone reminded me of "Jack and Diane" which is a song I really like. The words are tripe, but the melody and harmony and the movement of the musical background is quite compelling.

17. Personally, I judge music in a vacuum.

It's always tempting to let outside factors affect one's judgment of a piece of music, but I try like hell to judge a record by just one criterion: namely, how does it sound to me? If I think a record sounds good, then the person who created it can be the biggest asshole on two feet and I'll still like the song. If, on the other hand, I dislike a piece of music, I won't give a damn how noble the artist's intentions may have been when he walked into the studio.

though I like Mellencamp a lot. "Jack & Diane" drives me freaking nuts, possibly because the stations around here always play THAT one if they're gonna put some Mellencamp on. I've heard it waayyyy too many times to like it any more, never liked it that much to begin with.

The first Mellencamp song that allowed me to take him seriously. Face it, he was a fourth-rate Springsteen knockoff before that. Couldn't hack "Jack & Diane" or his other early stuff.

That being said, "Rain On The Scarecrow" is a first-rate Creedence ripoff.

I think it's more that he and Springsteen were both shooting for the Next Woody Guthrie status that Dylan had abandoned; Springsteen just did a lot better job at it. Mellencamp's heart was always in the right place; it's just that he's dumb as a tree. However, simple songs are usually the best, so this can often be an advantage.

Oh hell, everything off of "Scarecrow" and "Lonesome Jubilee". JM is another vastly underrated and marginalized artist who -*gasp*- dared to become popular. Infidel!

26. I've had a love/hate thing going on with him for years

I bought "Nothing Matters and What if it Did" when it came out after seeing him on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert (remember that?! lol) and I loved it. Then "American Fool" came out (Jack and Diane etc.) and he became a huge star but I didn't like much on that album. Even so, I went to see him and I liked him even less after that as he was such a jerk on stage. Then I loved "Uh, huh" so I overlooked his attitude and became a fan again. Saw him on the "Scarecrow" tour and got to sing "Under the Boardwalk" with him (I was in the front row and he sat on the edge of the stage) and he won me back totally by being a nice guy. He was a totally different guy from the one I saw years earlier.

I haven't bought any of his music in years but I like a few of his songs from recent albums. For example, I thought he did a killer cover of "Wild Night" and I liked "Your Life is Now" too but not enough to go buy the Cd's.

All and all I'd have to say I like him and respect him now.

Also like "The Authority Song" -- I actually almost quoted that song in a thread here the other day because it seemed appropriate. "Rain on the Scarecrow" expresses his sentiment well. I remember "Hurts So Good" being the first song of his I heard--when he was still known as John Cougar, I think--and I kinda liked that one too.
