OK DUers! Post your fond memories of screwing around with fireworks when you were younger!

1. Remember those little green army men?
Well when war broke out the fire crackers came in real handy! Except the time I was playing in my parents bedroom.

2. My oldest Sister
(not the puke one) dated this customs guy at the Tijuana Border crossing. Man, I was one happy little dude. Cherry bombs, bottle rockets, M-80's, peony firecrackers. My armymen played for real.

6. When I Was in the Navy, a Bunch of Us Went to Ensenada
and scored what appeared to be 1/4-sticks of dynamite. Not wanting to bring this stuff across the border, we found a deserted strip of beach between Ensenada and Tijuana and played Rommel of the Desert Corps - blowing up sand dunes until it was gone. It's a wonder we're not still in some Mexican jail.

4. I found about 10 packs of blackcats when I was in 5th grade
I took them to school and set off about 2 packs during lunch. Then I was suspended for a week.

5. Bottle Rocket Wars
were a common occurrence one magical summer, and were integral to our adolescent bonding experiences. Bottle rockets at 50 paces proved our mettle and improved our reflexes. I don't have any scars from these battles, but my shirt got burned once.

7. Bottle rocket fights,

Trying to blow up pop cans, toy cars, throwing black cats to see if I could get them to explode in the air...it's amazing I still have all 10 fingers fully functional!

9. When I Was 14, My Cousin Thought it Would Be Cool
to stick a Black Cat in my back pocket and light it. Stung like hell, but left only a first-degree burn. I retaliated by doing the same thing - in his shoe

10. Quarter stick of dynamite and a trashcan
Edited on Thu Jun-24-04 09:42 PM by texas1928
We shut off every street light in a 4 block radius. That trash can was flat and went about 100 feet in the air. It was spinning. Spent the rest of the night avoiding the police.

11. Arthur Ave in the Bronx, 1971
Firing BFR's at each other from rooftops; until one genius fired at a police car. Made a rooftop jump to escape.

* BFR = Big Fucking Rocket (but you knew that) :)

12. Remember when Levis had metal rivets on the pockets??
My "friend" put a firecracker in my back pocket...Blew the whole pocket off and left a mark on my butt that was there for ages..
I had put one in his shoe when he leaned over and his foot came out of his loafer.. It was just a ladyfinger...it scared the hell out of him, and he limped for a few minutes :)

I was about 14.. I didn't dare tell my Mom, because we also blew the mailbox off the side of our house, and to tell about the pocket would have implicated me on the mailbox too..

We used to use M-80's and cherry bombs to see how high we could send a manhole cover in the middle of the intersection by my friend's house..

Yes I still have all my fingers :)

13. The works bombs
not really fireworks, but a little tinfoil and some of The Works, or other ammonia product, and a tightly sealed bottle becomes a grenade. On top of that, it releases acids and toxic fumes! and they go bang in a big way

15. We Used To Poke Holes In The Bottom Of Old Tin Cans
Put a firecracker in the hole, and float the thing open end down in a bucket of water. When the cracker went off, it would drive the can high as an old tree....

16. Roman candle at finals/jury time in college...
The dorms consisted of 2 towers...one for men, the other for women...with a single story cafeteria/multipurpose room between them.

My single room looked out over the cafeteria roof towards the men's tower. Some of the practice rooms had views of the cafeteria, roof as well.

So we shot the roman candle out my window. It was a nice break from the tension.

17. Getting bombed on Schaefer beer as a teenager, smoking stoagies..
And setting off artillery shots on the 4th of july in the backwoods. Drop in the charge, light the fuse with the cigar, Yell "fire in the hole!" and get away.

THOOOM! ............. BANG!

Artillery shots. They're expensive, but fun!

19. My idiot friends were in the bed of my Datsun pick up.
Lighting bottlerockets in their hands and shooting them at various objects as we drove by, this being the Northern Cascades, logging country. The stupidest one of the bunch shot one through the open front door of a tavern frequented by loggers, miners, and truckers of various sorts.

It was a long, fast drive out of the mountains that day I can tell you.

dropped over the side of the boat at night. Underwater flash and a big bubble rising to the surface like a depth charge.

21. way too much
Well, Berlin is a pretty crazy place to be all year round, but around New Year's Eve the place is outright fucked up. People shoot rockets at bikers or just at the house on the other side of the street. The stupidest I ever did (Alas not in Berlin, but during my time in Switzerland), was to start a model plane with rockets tied under the wings. Of course it did not work, the plane spun wildly and almost came back to us.

I have a few great memories of the Netherlands as well, where Fireworks tend to be of lower quality, but extremely cheap - common sense has kept me from using extremely cheap and extremely dangerous Eastern Europe fireworks,

22. We would hold cherry bombs and M 80's until the last second
before throwing them. Almost too close a few times when you could feel the concushion from the blast. It's a miracle all of us still have all our fingers.
