I know, I'm hopelessly stuck in the 80's. Not much coming out of the current reggae scene that does much for me. I liked a lot of the earlier dj's, Eek-A-Mouse being another favorite.

But I prefer when reggae was about songs rather than raps over recycled beats. Black Uhuru, Peter Tosh, Steel Pulse, Bunny Wailer, Gregory Isaacs, Third World... ahh, those were the days. Black Uhuru with Sly and Robbie backing them was maybe the best concert I've ever attended.

The Yellowman, Eek-A-Mouse, Tony Rebel era was when hip hop influences were changingthe face of the music (not to mention work by people like Mutabaruka and Linton Kwesi Johnson) and you got dancehall and ragga.

I prefer neither - I love it all (well mostly)

I recently hooked up a turntable (!) just so I could spin LKJ's "Forces Of Victory." That record still kicks serious butt.

There's a radio station out of URI that has reggae programs on the weekends. I am fascinated by this one show where the dj mixes between different releases by several artists that all use the exact same backing tracks. I can't think of any other popular music in the world where this is done, the instrumental track is like a commodity that's bought or stolen or borrowed or whatever, and somebody just talks or chants or sings (often grossly off-pitch) over it and puts it out as a record. I'm sure there's some kind of artistry involved in this, but I admit that it escapes me. I find it fatiguing.

Give me Toots and the Maytals any day.

Does anybody in Jamaica write "songs" anymore? I'm not being facetious, I'd go and drop some money on new reggae music if there were something of quality outside of the dancehall genre out there. I like songs I can SING, and you know, Toots Hibbert, Michael Rose, David Hines... those guys could SING.

I think he's a POWERFUL musician, and though he falls under the catergory of dancehall he sings beautifully!

Plus he does flips on stage like a maniac - great shows!!!
