I love San Diego!
Letters to the editor are better than morning coffee for getting my blood pumping.

"...after the grocery store strike, I noticed that the stores hired many blacks during the strike and when it was over, the stores were flooded again with workers speaking Spanish to each other. I was told the black workers would have to seek other employment. My heart grieved because these are the people who deserve the jobs; not those who come here, but those who were brought here."

Thank you very much Ms.YVONNE ALEXANDER for proving that one can be other than a white anglo-saxon protestant, and also be an racist jerkoff.

Just another beautiful day in ultra conservative San Diego!!

1. Thanks for the heads-up
I haven't read my U-T for three days. Maybe I'll just toss everything but the Op-Ed pages and the comics to save time.

2. Hell, if you think the Union-Tribune letters section is bad,
Try the North County Times. A more reactionary, racist, ignorant bunch of assholes you couldn't hope to find than in North County.

5. Hey neighbors
First off, you could have found a single individual to provide a quote like that just about anywhere. It's that thing called diversity. I know this place seems far less diverse than most places (politically, anyway), but I really sense a change for the better (my daughter's out on the streets registering voters as Dems and finding people remarkably receptive) Okay, so flame me as a cock-eyed optimist.

6. San Diego
I've lived in San Diego since 1977 except for a 3 year stint in SF during the early 80s. It is definitely a fairly conservative town. Not quite so bad as Orange County, but pretty damn close. I'd consider moving, but I have a good job and I love the weather. I guess I consider it worth having to endure the conservative nature of the city.

Funny, I didnt' notice any more African-Americans as grocery clerks during the strike then there were before. Maybe I'm not as observant as Ms Yvonne (wasn't that a character on the Pee Wee Hermann show??). Or maybe I'm just so "color blind" that I don't even think in that way anymore.

Also, those workers who took jobs during the strike were well aware that they wouldn't be retained when the strike was over. They knew it going in should have been prepared for the end of the strike. Seems Ms Yvonne wanted the stores to fire the union workers and hire the replacements...but someone should ask her this...Why didn't those replacements apply and work for the stores earlier?? Why were they taking jobs they knew to be temporary?

She also needs to ask herself why those same African-Americans that took the grocery workers jobs are not applying for and taking jobs that those illegal imigrants are taking. No one is preventing them from doing that except themselves. Perhaps they don't like the pay? Well I wonder if Ms Yvonne would be able to afford fruits & vegetables and eating out at a restaurant if all the illegal imigrants were deported? Wasn't there a recent movie out that addressed this scenario? Where all the latino illegal imigrants just suddenly disappeared one day?? She needs to go see that movie.

I'm not advocating letting anyone come to this country that wants to, but rounding up and deporting them all is not the solution.

7. I used to think San Diego was conservative too
then I moved to Arizona. ;-)

I grew up in and lived in SD most of my life and I thought it was pretty conservative until I moved here. There is no comparison. At least there were vast areas of SD that were pretty liberal; some of the coastal towns etc. The good news is, AZ has become more liberal since I moved here in '96, because of all of the Californians moving here.

8. Darrell Issa and Howard Kaloogian
Are BOTH from North San Diego County.

Kaloogian is trying to stop the showing of F911. They both spearheaded the politically-motivated recall of a duly-elected Governor.

North County. 'Nuff said.

9. San Diego moving to a more moderate viewpoint...
We now have 2 Democratic congressmen... and will probably pick up a 3rd (out of 5)...

Of course, we still have the country club Republicans in North County... and the rascist Republicans in Klantee... and the military men who think Republicans are 'better' for the military... but it's improved since I moved here in the mid 1980;s.

Who should have stayed out of politics, he's going to destroy his legacy. He won't be remembered for his skill with a plane, he'll be remembered for being a reich wing lunatic.
