I finally saw Kill Bill Vol. 1 last night. Question???

Can anyone explain this film to me? My son loved it, I never figured out it's appeal. Am I too old to get it? Was there a point? I like QT but this one left me behind. I know I am really late to the game here but I don't get out to see many films. Help anyone?

1. I'm in the Same Boat/Ship

(don't see many, etc.) Just saw it a month or two ago since all the fuss was being made over the #2 one and it seemed necessary to see #1. Seems like just another one in which the technical fx proficiency takes precedence over everything. Since in real life, ANY little knick or blister or stubbed toe HURTS LIKE HELL, it is asking TOO MUCH suspension of disbelief to see supposed people on screen going through the most outlandish physical antics and going on to even more outlandish antics. As for plot, it was basically revenge. Can't help more than this. And I'm not too motivated to see #2.

I wondered if it somehow tied into the kinds of games that are available, the shooting/spying/hunt'em down kinds, and Japanese cartoons. I hate to say too much because I am so uninformed about this and don't want to sound stupid but really, other than revenge I just did not get the film at all. Oh well.

2. it was an homage to all the cheesy kung-fu flicks from the 70s..

guess you had to be into films like 'Master of the Flying Guillotine' to truly appreciate it.

3. Live action Anime.

7. The second one

really brings home the spaghetti western feel. Gone is the samarai (sp) sword action as much. The second one is much more of a complete movie. The first feels like the ultimate summer movie to me though, just silly fun at the movie theater. I think the Oct. release date was a mistake.

8. Anime is Japanese animation

It's hard to describe if you've never seen it... a little bit film noir, a little bit xxx-rated, and a whole lotta fightin' goin' on.

I went to Kill Bill expecting not to really like it.... but I did. :D Go figure.

If you want to get a feel for it, watch the old Bruce Lee flicks: Enter the Dragon, etc.

or the aforementioned 'Master of the Flying Guillotine'. He totally referenced Master with that weapon Gogo was using.

11. It is interesting that the Irish illustrator Harry Clarke had a

big influence on anime . His black and white book illustrations from the 20's really look like modern Japanese anime.

anime in the movie? I guess it must have been. OK, this probably explains why I did not like it very much. I never cared for that genre of movie. Thanks, I think I get it now.

13. I love Kill Bill

Though I have yet to see volume 2, Kill Bill vol. 1 blew me away. Basically, it's a tribute to old samurai flicks and spaghetti Westerns. The premise of the story is a female assassin tries to leave the business to get married and start a new life. However, her wedding is crashed by her former proteges and she, along with all the wedding guests are gunned down execution style. The heroine, Black Mamba (Uma Thurman), survives the massacre, taking a severe beating and a bullet to the head. BM remains comatose for four years, and she awakens to realize that her baby, whose father is the title character Bill's, has apparently been killed by it's father and her fellow assassins, Copperhead, Cottonmouth, Sidewinder, and California Mountain Snake. She also realizes that for the past four years while she was in a coma, her body had been pimped off by a man whom she proceeds to kill. She steals his car and thus begins her quest to kill those who wrecked her life. It's basically a revenge flick.

I don't even really like action movies, but I absolutely love Kill Bill. The plot is so simple, but so provocative, plus you can't go wrong with Uma.

14. Tribute or no, it was repulsive

I must be showing my age here, and I never thought I would have a problem with gratuitous violence, but this film was just disgusting. It was way beyond cartoons or reverence for Kung Fu pulp: it was nauseating in its relentless glorification of bloodbaths. Pulp Fiction had more character. This is just dreck and schlock, from a schmuck no less.

His direction was very good, btw. But that couldn't save it for me.
